چکیده

Introduction: Other than the few Martian meteorites that have been found on Earth and the data being collected by the Mars Exploration Rovers, all data from Mars is remotely sensed which lends it to be developed and analyzed within a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform. This study is being accomplished by bringing together multiple datasets from the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC), Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), and Thermal Imagery Emission Spectrometer (THEMIS) instruments within a GIS. The combination of high and medium resolution images projected onto a three dimensional digital elevation model of the region can be used to measure thicknesses of stratigraphic units, overall structure, and apparent strike and dip of those units. The West Candor portion of Valles Marineris has excellent coverage with narrow angle MOC images, and we are using the outlined methodology to study the stratigraphy of Older Interior Deposits [1], in order to develop a representative stratigraphic framework for this region. The results from this study will improve our understanding of late Hesperian to early Amazonian geologic history and may assist in the selection of future landing sites for robotic missions.

First high‐resolution stratigraphic column of the Martian north polar layered deposits

[1] This study achieves the first high‐spatial‐resolution, layer‐scale, measured stratigraphic column of the Martian north polar layered deposits using a 1m‐posting DEM. The marker beds found throughout the upper North Polar Layered Deposits range in thickness from 1.6 m–16.0 m +/− 1.4 m, and 6 of 13 marker beds are separated by ∼25–35 m. Thin‐layer sets have average layer separations of 1.6 m....

Microbiostratigraphy of the Qom Formation in south and west of Tafresh, Central Iran

The Qom Formation, a series of shales, sandstones and carbonate deposits, is the last transgression of the sea in Central Iran sedimentary basin. Foraminifera are one of the most important and numerous fossil groups present in the Qom Formation. In this study, the micropaleontology of the Qom Formation in three measured stratigraphic sections in south and west of Tafresh (Rakin, Band-e-Ali Nagh...

Earliest Campanian - latest Maastrichtian sequence stratigraphy based on planktonic foraminifera, Fars province, Zagros, Iran

The Gurpi, Tarbur and Sachun formations have been investigated in the studied section in the Fars Province, in order to determine their sequence stratigraphy. On the basis of done studies on the cores of borehole, four main microfacies have been recognized in four stratigraphic sequence deposited during the Campanian to Maastrichtian. The lowermost sequence, was deposited in the early Campanian...

Constrained Seismic Sequence Stratigraphy of Asmari - Kajhdumi interval with well-log Data

Sequence stratigraphy is a key step in interpretation of the seismic reflection data. It was originally developed by seismic specialists, and then the usage of high-resolution well logs and core data was taken into consideration in its implementation. The current paper aims in performing sequence stratigraphy using three-dimensional seismic data, well logs (gamma ray, sonic, porosity, density, ...

Sulfates in Valles Marineris and Implications for Mars' Aqueous History

Introduction: Mapping the type and distribution of hydrated mineralogy is one way to track the aqueous history of Mars. Sulfates are a potentially good tracer of past climate because they form by aqueous processes , so their presence, volume, and process of formation can characterize how much water was available. The sulfates in Valles Marineris (monohydrated Mg or Fe sulfate and polyhydrated s...
