چکیده

In this paper, details of a conjunctive surface–subsurface numerical model for the simulation of overland flow are presented. In this model, the complete onedimensional Saint-Venant equations for the surface flow are solved by a simple, explicit, essentially non-oscillating (ENO) scheme. The two-dimensional Richards equation in the mixed form for the subsurface flow is solved using an efficient strongly implicit finite-difference scheme. The explicit scheme for the surface flow component results in a simple method for connecting the surface and subsurface components. The model is verified using the experimental data and previous numerical results available in the literature. The proposed model is used to study the two-dimensionality effects due to non-homogeneous subsurface characteristics. Applicability of the model to handle complex subsurface conditions is demonstrated. q 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. All rights reserved

Integrated surface–groundwater flow modeling: A free-surface overland flow boundary condition in a parallel groundwater flow model

Interactions between surface and groundwater are a key component of the hydrologic budget on the watershed scale. Models that honor these interactions are commonly based on the conductance concept that presumes a distinct interface at the land surface, separating the surface from the subsurface domain. These types of models link the subsurface and surface domains via an exchange flux that depen...

Modeling of Overland Flow Contamination Due to Heavy Metals in Shallow Soil Horizons

Heavy metals in southeast Kansas are frequently found in the shallow soil layers. Rainfall events in this region often generate overland flows which cause the release and migration of these chemicals into surface waters. The chemicals are then transported in surface waters to downstream locations and, as such, pose a threat to the quality of both fields along streams and surface and ground wate...

Experimental Study and Numerical Modeling of Surface/Subsurface Flow at Field Scale

Infiltration which occurred in the process of runoff on farmland surface causes the increasing of soil moisture in unsaturated zone. It’s necessary to comprehend the dynamic process during farmland runoff process, analyze the coupling mechanism of water movement and solute transport among surface/subsurface zone. In this paper, a physically-based, spatially-distributed model was built for simul...

Surface Runoff in Watershed Modeling—Turbulent or Laminar Flows?

Determination of overland sheet flow depths, velocities and celerities across the hillslope in watershed modeling is important towards estimation of surface storage, travel times to streams and soil detachment rates. It requires careful characterization of the flow processes. Similarly, determination of the temporal variation of hillslope-riparian-stream hydrologic connectivity requires estimat...

An Inter-comparison of Two Coupled Hydrogeological Models

Benchmarking coupled surface-subsurface flow models becomes more important as they are increasingly used for operational purposes (e.g. in water management) and long-term analysis (e.g. in climate change research). For this reason we inter-compare the hydrogeological models HydroGeoSphere and OpenGeoSys and present results with emphasis on the parametrization of the surface-soil water coupling ...
