Inhomogeneities in Sheared Ultrathin Lubricating Films

چکیده
Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics computer simulations have been used to study nanoscopically confined oligomer films under shear. Beyond the well-known density layering across such films, other structural and dynamical inhomogeneities exist across such films and are discussed here. When these filmsare subjected to strong shear flows, slip appears at the confining surfaces or inside thepore, depending on the wall interactions. For strong wall affinities interlayer slip develops between the adsorbed layer and the free chains, resulting ina structural discontinuity; amolecularmechanism, involving shear induced conformational changes of the adsorbed chains, is associated with this interlayer slip. Moreover, the resistance to flow (quantified through an effective viscosity) changes considerably across the film, with a dramatic viscosity increase of the adsorbed layer near attractive surfaces. Shear thinning is mainly taking place inside this more viscous interfacial layer, whereas the dynamics in the middle of the film remain bulklike; thus, there also exists strong inhomogeneity in the dynamics of the system. A comparison with SFA experimental and theoretical studies is also made.

Discrimination Between Static and Dynamic Heterogeneities in Single Dye Diffusion in Ultrathin Liquid Films
1. Introduction In single molecule experiments dye molecules are used to trace dynamics e.g. of diffusing DNA along membranes. We used Rhodamine B as a probe to study the microscopic mobility in an organic liquid (TEHOS) at the interface with a solid (Si wafer with 100 nm thermally grown SiO 2) via video wide-field microscopy. In previous experiments [1] we were able to show that diffusion with...
متن کاملLog-rolling micelles in sheared amphiphilic thin films.
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that sheared solutions of cylindrical micelle-forming amphiphiles behave very differently under extreme confinement as compared to the bulk. When confined to ultrathin films, the self-assembled cylindrical micelles roll along the shearing direction and align parallel to each other with their axes along the vorticity direction, as opposed to aligning...

Introduction: Inclusion of inhomogeneities such as air-filled cavities in the head and neck treatment fields may result in potential dosimetric disagreement which was caused by electronic disequilibrium. Most of treatments planning systems (TPS) are not able to predict dose distribution of inhomogeneous regions accurately. EBT2 films are used frequently in radiotherapy quality ass...
متن کاملTemperature dependence of the surface anisotropy of Fe ultrathin films on Cu(001).
We report an experimental approach to separate temperature dependent reversible and irreversible contributions to the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Fe films grown at low temperatures on Cu(001) substrates. The surface anisotropy K(S)(T) is found to decrease linearly with temperature, causing a thermally induced spin reorientation into the plane. The irreversible shift of the spin reorien...
متن کاملFriction Control in Thin-Film Lubrication
A novel method is proposed for controlling and reducing friction in thin-film boundary lubricated junctions, through coupling of small amplitude (of the order of 1 Å) directional mechanical oscillations of the confining boundaries to the molecular degrees of freedom of the sheared interfacial lubricating fluid. Extensive grandcanonical molecular dynamics simulations revealed the nature of dynam...
