چکیده

The mechanism responsible for unusual mechanical properties of tension wood gelatinous fiber (Gfiber) was investigated. We discussed origins of high tensile growth stress, high drying shrinkage, and rapid increase of Young’s modulus due to drying, in association with microscopic structure of gelatinous layer (G-layer). Anatomical, crystallographic, and micromechanical approaches were employed. As the result, it is cleared that G-layer structure as hydro-gel has a key to understand hygromechanical properties in the tension wood G-fiber. The origin of contractive force in maturing G-layer is still unknown, however, the structure and behavior of the swollen hydro-gel may give some key to solve it.

Stiffness Prediction of Beech Wood Flour Polypropylene Composite by using Proper Fiber Orientation Distribution Function

One of the most famous methods to predict the stiffness of short fiber composites is micromechanical modeling. In this study, a Representative Volume Element (RVE) of a beech wood flour natural composite has been designed and the orientation averaging approach has been utilized to predict its stiffness tensor. The novelty of this work is in finding the proper fiber orientation distribution func...

On the detachment of gelatinous layer in tension wood fiber

The detachment of gelatinous layer (G-layer), often observed on microtome cross sections, leads some authors believe that G-layer cannot act as the driving force of longitudinal shrinkage in tension wood. The aim of this study was to observe the detachment of G-layer along fibres. Green wood block was cut transversely into two samples. One sample was kept in water and the other ovendried. One f...

Role of GA3, GA4 and uniconazole-P in controlling gravitropism and tension wood formation in Fraxinus mandshurica Rupr. var. japonica Maxim. seedlings.

GA(3) and GA(4) (gibberellins) play an important role in controlling gravitropism and tension wood formation in woody angiosperms. In order to improve our understanding of the role of GA(3) and GA(4) on xylem cell formation and the G-layer, we studied the effect of GA(3) and GA(4) and uniconazole-P, which is an inhibitor of GA biosynthesis, on tension wood formation by gravity in Fraxinus mands...

Growth stresses are highly controlled by the amount of G-layer in poplar tension wood

To determine how gelatinous fibres and gelatinous layers contribute to the magnitude of longitudinal growth stress in tension wood, anatomical measurements of gelatinous fibres were carried out on poplar tension wood (Populus I4551). It was found that (a) no gelatinous fibres were observed under a growth strain level of 0.06 to 20 0.08%; (b) almost 100% of the non-conductive tissues contained g...

Gibberellin mediates the development of gelatinous fibres in the tension wood of inclined Acacia mangium seedlings.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Gibberellin stimulates negative gravitropism and the formation of tension wood in tilted Acacia mangium seedlings, while inhibitors of gibberellin synthesis strongly inhibit the return to vertical growth and suppress the formation of tension wood. To characterize the role of gibberellin in tension wood formation and gravitropism, this study investigated the role of gibberell...
