چکیده

The distributions of L([O iii]λ5007), black hole (BH) mass and L/LEdd in two large samples of type-I and type-II active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are compared in order to test the suggestion that radiation pressure force is affecting the gas velocity in the broad line region and hence the BH mass determination. The samples are drawn from the SDSS archive and are modified to represent the same parent distribution at 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.2. BH masses in type-I sources are calculated in two different ways, one using a simple virial mass assumption and the other by taking into account the effect of radiation pressure force on the gas. The simple virial mass estimate results in good agreement with the σ∗based BH mass and L/LEdd estimates in type-II sources. In contrast, there is a clear disagreement in the L/LEdd distributions when radiation pressure-based estimates are used. This indicates that radiation pressure force is not important in 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 0.2 AGNs with L5100=10 42.8−44.8 ergs s. This has important implications to the physics of the gas producing the broad emission lines in AGNs, in particular the existence of extremely large column density (∼ 10 cm) clouds. Cosmic Evolution of Mass Accretion Rate and Metalicity in Active Galactic Nuclei

We present line and continuum measurements for 9818 SDSS type-I active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with z ≤ 0.75. The data are used to study the four dimensional space of black hole mass, normalized accretion rate (L/LEdd), metalicity and redshift. The main results are: 1. L/LEdd is smaller for larger mass black holes at all redshifts. 2. For a given black hole mass, L/LEdd∝ zγ or (1 + z)δ where the...

On the evolution of the black hole:spheroid mass ratio

We present the results of a study which uses the 3CRR sample of radio-loud active galactic nuclei to investigate the evolution of the black-hole:spheroid mass ratio in the most massive early-type galaxies from 0 < z < 2. Radio-loud unification is exploited to obtain virial (linewidth) black-hole mass estimates from the 3CRR quasars, and stellar mass estimates from the 3CRR radio galaxies, there...

The Relation between the Mid-infrared Emission and Black Hole Mass in Active Galactic Nuclei: a Direct Way to Probe Black Hole Growth?

We use a large, heterogeneous sample of local active galactic nuclei (AGN) that includes Seyfert 1s, Seyfert 2s and PG quasars to investigate for the first time the relation between black hole mass (MBH) and mid-infrared nuclear emission. We find a clear relation between MBH and 10μm nuclear luminosity for these local AGNs. There are no significant differences between type 1 and type 2 objects,...

The Relation between Mid-infrared Emission and Black Hole Mass in Active Galactic Nuclei: a Direct Way to Probe Black Hole Growth?

We use a large, heterogeneous sample of local active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that includes Seyfert 1 galaxies, Seyfert 2 galaxies, and Palomar-Green quasars to investigate for the first time the relation between black hole mass ( ) and mid-infrared nuclear emission. We find a clear relation between and 10 mm nuclear luminosity M M BH BH for these local AGNs. There are no significant differences ...

Accretion and star formation rates in low redshift type-II active galactic nuclei

Accretion and star formation (SF) rates in low redshift SDSS type-II active galactic nuclei (AGN) are critically evaluated. Comparison with photoionization models indicates that bolometric luminosity (Lbol) estimates based on L([O iii]λ5007) severely underestimate Lbol in low ionization sources such as LINERs. An alternative method based on L(Hβ) is less sensitive to ionization level and a nove...
