The next frontier for communications networks: power management
نویسندگان
چکیده
Storage, memory, processor, and communications bandwidth are all relatively plentiful and inexpensive. However, a growing expense in the operation of computer networks is electricity usage. Estimates place devices connected to the Internet as consuming about 2%, and growing, of the total electricity produced in the USA—much of this power consumption is unnecessary. Power management is needed to reduce this large and growing energy consumption of the Internet. We see power management as the ‘next frontier’ in research in computer networks. In this paper, we propose methods for reducing energy consumption of networked desktop computers. Using traffic characterization of university dormitory computers, we show that there is significant idle time that can be exploited for power management. However, current Ethernet adapters in desktop computers lack the capabilities needed to allow existing system power management features to be enabled. We address this problem with a proxying Ethernet adapter that handles routine network tasks for a desktop computer when it is in a low-power sleep mode. This proxying adapter can allow existing power management features in desktop computers to remain enabled and have the computer be ‘on the network’ at all times. The energy that we expect can be saved is in the range of 0.8–2.7 billion US dollars/year. q 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

EXTENDED ABSRACT FOR KEYNOTE TALK The next frontier for communications networks: Power management
Performance evaluation is used to gain an understanding of how to make the best use of scarce resources. Storage, memory, processing, and communications bandwidth are all relatively plentiful and inexpensive. What is the next frontier for communications networks and performance evaluation? I will argue that it is power management to achieve cost-effective operation. In the past few years, entir...
متن کاملOptimal Power Management to Minimize SER in Amplify and-Forward Relay Networks
This paper studies optimal power allocation to minimize symbol error rate (SER) of amplify-and-forward cooperative diversity networks. First, we analytically solve optimal power allocation problem to minimize SER for three different scenarios, namely, multi-branch single-relay, single-branch multi-relay and multi-branch multi-relay cooperative diversity networks, all subject to a given total re...
متن کاملOn Joint Sub-channel Allocation, Duplexing Mode Selection, and Power Control in Full-Duplex Co-Channel Femtocell Networks
As one of the promising approaches to increase the network capacity, Full-duplex (FD) communications have recently gained a remarkable attention. FD communication enables wireless nodes to simultaneously send and receive data through the same frequency band. Thanks to the recent achievements in the self-interference (SI) cancellation, this type of communication is expected to be potentially uti...
متن کاملPower Amplifier Linearization Using Six-port Receiver for DVB-S2 Satellite Communications
A digital look-up table adaptive predistortion technique using a six-port receiver for power amplifier linearization is presented. The system is designed in Ka-band for a DVB-S2 satellite link. We use a six-port receiver at the linearizationloop in place of classic heterodyne receivers. The six-port receiver is implemented by the use of passive microwavecircuits and detector diodes. This approa...
متن کاملOptimal energy management of the photovoltaic based distribution networks considering price responsive loads, energy storage systems and convex power flows.
Nowadays, presence of photovoltaic systems in distribution network is not without challenge and it may not have economic productivity for the system under the lack of optimal management. Energy storage systems are able to cope with this problem. Therefore, in this paper, a new method is proposed for energy management of the distribution networks in order to show that how presence of the energy ...
