A modified matrix sign function method for projected Lyapunov equations

چکیده
In this paper we discuss the numerical solution of projected generalized Lyapunov equations using the matrix sign function method. Such equations arise in stability analysis and control problems for descriptor systems including model reduction based on balanced truncation. It is known that the matrix sign function method applied to a matrix pencil λE−A converges if and only if λE−A is of index at most two. The convergence is quadratic if E is nonsingular, and it is linear, otherwise. We will propose a modification of the matrix sign function method that converges quadratically for pencils of arbitrary index. Numerical examples will be presented to demonstrate the properties of the modified method.

Projected Generalized Discrete-Time Periodic Lyapunov Equations and Balanced Realization of Periodic Descriptor Systems
From the necessary and sufficient conditions for complete reachability and observability of periodic time-varying descriptor systems, the symmetric positive semi-definite reachability/observability Gramians are defined. These Gramians can be shown to satisfy some projected generalized discrete-time periodic Lyapunov equations. We propose a numerical method for solving these projected Lyapunov e...

We discuss the Smith iteration for solving large-scale sparse projected discrete-time periodic Lyapunov equations which arise in periodic state feedback problems and in model reduction of periodic descriptor systems. Two algorithms are presented in this paper. The first one works with the cyclic lifted representation of the corresponding projected discrete-time periodic Lyapunov equations. In t...

متن کاملEecient Solution of Coupled Lyapunov Equations via Matrix Sign Function Iteration
The controllability and observability Gramians of time-invariant linear systems are given by the solutions of two coupled Lyapunov equations. These Gramians play an essential role in many areas of control theory such as computing Hankel singular values, system balaning, and related model reduction algorithms. We investigate the numerical solution of coupled Lyapunov equations by iterations for ...

LOW-RANK ITERATIVE METHODS FOR PROJECTED GENERALIZED LYAPUNOV EQUATIONS TATJANA STYKEL Abstract. We generalize an alternating direction implicit method and the Smith method for large-scale projected generalized Lyapunov equations. Such equations arise in model reduction of descriptor systems. Low-rank versions of these methods are also presented, which can be used to compute low-rank approximat...
