Cognition, unconscious processes

چکیده
1. The Psychological Unconscious The psychological unconscious refers to mental structures and processes that influence a person's ongoing experience, thought, and action outside of conscious awareness (Kihlstrom, 1987). In the 19th century, the concept was exemplified by Helmholtz's idea that conscious perception is based on unconscious inferences; by Pierce and Jastrow's demonstration of the registration of subliminal stimuli; by the notions of co-conscious and subconscious thought developed by Janet and James on the basis of their observations of hysteria and hypnosis; and of course by Freud's assertion that conscious mental life is determined by unconscious conflict surrounding primitive sexual and aggressive impulses.

Is the unconscious smart or dumb?
How sophisticated is unconscious cognition? This is one of the most fundamental questions about the unconscious that has been posed by research psychologists over the past century. Anthony Greenwald takes a contemporary look at this classical problem and concludes that unconscious cognition is severely limited in its analytic capability. In response, other leading scholars agree that the realit...
متن کاملConscious and unconscious processes in cognition
Characterizing the relationships between conscious and unconscious processes is one of the most important and long-standing goals of cognitive psychology. Renewed interest in the nature of consciousness — long considered not to be scientifically explorable —, as well as the increasingly widespread availability of functional brain imaging techniques, now offer the possibility of detailed explora...
متن کاملBrain. Conscious and Unconscious Mechanisms of Cognition, Emotions, and Language
Conscious and unconscious brain mechanisms, including cognition, emotions and language are considered in this review. The fundamental mechanisms of cognition include interactions between bottom-up and top-down signals. The modeling of these interactions since the 1960s is briefly reviewed, analyzing the ubiquitous difficulty: incomputable combinatorial complexity (CC). Fundamental reasons for C...
متن کاملExecutive control over unconscious cognition: attentional sensitization of unconscious information processing
Unconscious priming is a prototypical example of an automatic process, which is initiated without deliberate intention. Classical theories of automaticity assume that such unconscious automatic processes occur in a purely bottom-up driven fashion independent of executive control mechanisms. In contrast to these classical theories, our attentional sensitization model of unconscious information p...
متن کاملAwareness and metacognition
Kentridge and Heywood (this issue) extend the concept of metacognition to include unconscious processes. We acknowledge the possible contribution of unconscious processes, but favor a central role of awareness in metacognition. We welcome Shimamura's (this issue) extension of the concept of metacognitive regulation to include aspects of working memory, and its relation to executive attention. C...
