Nitrogen and Energy Supplements for Low Quality Roughages
نویسنده
چکیده
The two approaches often are complementary, as treatments which increase intake or digestibility may generate a need for additional nutrients to supply the needs of rumen bacteria as well as of the host animal. In these papers we have considered nitrogen (N) requirements of rumen bacteria and of the animal, in animals fed untreated and chemically-treated forages of low nutritive value. The reason for considering both bacterial and animal requirements is because all proteins contain rumen-degradable and by-pass fractions, the relative significance of which is likely to vary with the circumstances in which it is fed. Proteins also provide supplementary energy and minerals which may increase the edibility of roughages. Thus, effects of protein supplements may be attributed to one or more of the following factors:(i) slow release of N in the rumen (ii) increase in the proportion of nutrients absorbed as essential amino acids (iii) supplementary energy, including gluconeogenesis (iv) stimulatory effects on intake.

The Utilization of Urea-supplemented Roughages
In many parts of the world, poor quality roughages low in nitrogen are the only food available to the grazing ruminant. Experiments have shown that under some conditions, still not clearly defined, urea can improve both the digestion and intake of these roughages, and also the nitrogen status of the animal. However, there are reports from both the laboratory and the field, which indicate that u...

The soluble, total-bound and ®bre-bound condensed tannins (CT) in Cassia rotundifolia (cassia), Lablab purpureus (lablab) and Macroptilium atropurpureum (siratro) grown in tropical and subtropical regions were determined by the butanol±HCl method. Cassia had the highest total CT content of 29.5 g/kg DM than that of lablab, 16.9 g/kg DM which was intermediate while that of siratro, 12.4 g/kg DM,...
متن کاملThe Effect of Urea on the Utilization of Low-Quality Roughage by the Ruminant
In Australia, the main interest in urea. feeding to ruminants is the possibility of using this substance as a protein supplement for roughages so high in fibre and low in protein that they constitute sub-maintenance rations for animals grazing them. Several workers have shown that the loss of weight of ruminants fed such roughages can be prevented, or reduced, by adding a supplement of urea and...
متن کاملRoughage Source in Feedlot Diets
Story in Brief The influence of roughage source on digestion of :1 high grain diet was measured with 24 Hereford-Angus steers. The six roughages tested were cottonseed hulls, prairie hay, alfalfa hay, sorghum plant silage and two varieties of corn plant silage. The diet consisted of 82 percent whole shelled corn, 10 percent roughage and 8 percent supplement. Daily feed intake was restricted to ...

During that period, the major part of the ration ...
