Modeling the SAR Signature of Nonlinear Internal Waves

چکیده

The objectives of this project are to understand, quantify and model the factors that influence the SAR signature of internal waves (IWs) using in situ and remote measurements. To accomplish this we have been studying the variables that impact the both the surface roughness and the corresponding radar backscattering cross section. Previous efforts focused on modeling the the modulation of surface waves by IWs using the action balance equation with source terms of energy input from the wind and energy loss from viscous dissipation. Our work seeks to include additional action source terms such as wave-wave interaction, generation of parasitic capillary waves and breaking waves.

Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging of Internal Waves

Over the past 10 years, synthetic aperture radars (SAR) have frequently detected pronounced signatures of nonlinear, coastal internal waves 1-6 that are produced by the interaction of short-wavelength surface waves with internal wave-induced surface currents. A qualitative representation of the signature generation process is shown in Fig. 1 for a group of nonlinear internal waves. At the leadi...

On the Variety of Internal Wave Radar Observations in the Ocean. 1. Slick-like Signatures

It was shown recently that three different types of short-period Internal Wave SAR signatures occur on the Iberian Shelf depending on parameters of surface-active films. Large scale modulation of film characteristics by currents associated with internal tidal waves can also produce a signature in ERS SAR images. On the Western Iberian shelf short-period IWs typically propagate in groups of pack...

Fine-scale features on the sea surface in SAR satellite imagery – Part 2: Numerical modeling

With the advent of the new generation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, it has become possible to resolve fine-scale features on the sea surface on the scale of meters. The proper identification of sea surface signatures in SAR imagery can be challenging, since some features may be due to atmospheric distortions (gravity waves, squall lines) or anthropogenic influences (slicks), and...

Monsoon regulation of Lombok Strait internal waves

[1] We use satellite imagery and numerical modeling to investigate the characteristics of Lombok Strait nonlinear internal waves in relation to the dominant monsoon seasonality. Two basic wave types are identified, the first of which represents the well‐known arc‐like internal wave (AIW) that radiates uniformly away from its generation region near the sill in regular sequences of ranked soliton...

Observations of Atmospheric Gravity Waves over the Chinese Seas by Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar

On synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired over the ocean often sea surface signatures of atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs) as well as of oceanic internal waves are visible. They often look quite similar and it is not always easy to decide whether the wave-like patterns result from AGWs or from oceanic internal waves. In this paper we present criteria how to discriminate between these two...
