Direct simulations of spherical particle motion in Bingham liquids Prashant, J. J. Derksen Chemical & Materials Engineering Department, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 2G6 Canada Submitted to Computers & Chemical Engineering, October 2009 Accepted: September 2010 Abstract The present work deals with the development of a direct simulation strategy for solving the motion of spherical particles in a Bingham liquid. The simulating strategy is based on a lattice-Boltzmann flow solver and the dual-viscosity Bingham model. Validation of the strategy is first performed for single phase (lid driven cavity flow) and then for two phase flows. Lid driven cavity flow results illustrate the flow’s response to an increase of the yield stress. We show how the settling velocity of a single sphere sedimenting in a Bingham liquid is influenced by the yield stress of the liquid. The hydrodynamic interactions between two spheres are studied at low and moderate Reynolds number. At low Reynolds number, two spheres settle with equal velocity. At moderate Reynolds number, the yield effects are softened and the trailing sphere approaches the leading sphere until collision occurs.

Steady and Transient Motion of Spherical Particles in Viscoelastic Liquids

1. Introduction The motion of a spherical particle through a fluid with non-Newtonian rheological properties is a well-studied problem with a broad range of practical application from sedimentation of muds and slurries to processing of filled polymer melts. As a benchmark problem for computational rheology and the evaluation of numerical codes (cf. Hassager, 1988), the sedimentation of a sphere...

Numerical simulation of effect of non-spherical particle shape and bed size on hydrodynamics of packed beds

Fluid flow has a fundamental role in the performance of packed bed reactors. Some related issues, such as pressure drop, are strongly affected by porosity, so non-spherical particles are used in industry for enhancement or creation of the desired porosity. In this study, the effects of particle shape, size, and porosity of the bed on the hydrodynamics of packed beds are investigated with three ...

Robust Sliding Mode Controller for Trajectory Tracking and Attitude Control of a Nonholonomic Spherical Mobile Robot

Based on dynamic modeling, robust trajectory tracking control of attitude and position of a spherical mobile robot is proposed. In this paper, the spherical robot is composed of a spherical shell and three independent rotors which act as the inner driver mechanism. Owing to rolling without slipping assumption, the robot is subjected to two nonholonomic constraints. The state space representatio...

Alignment of particles in sheared viscoelastic fluids.

We investigate the shear-induced structure formation of colloidal particles dissolved in non-Newtonian fluids by means of computer simulations. The two investigated visco-elastic fluids are a semi-dilute polymer solution and a worm-like micellar solution. Both shear-thinning fluids contain long flexible chains whose entanglements appear and disappear continually as a result of Brownian motion a...
