Implicit Surfaces for Geometric Modeling
نویسندگان
چکیده
The rst section will build some basics. It will contrast implicit and parametric methods, and overview the broad range of implicit surfaces used today. It will develop fundamental properties of quadratic implicit polynomial surfaces, and illustrate how these surfaces have been traditionally used in CAD systems for handling \prismatic" objects (e.g. piston rods), and how recent research on algebraic patches has extended their power to now support \free-form" objects (e.g. bones). This is followed by an introduction to the class of implicit skeletal methods that build shapes using distance functions and blends. As a new twist, this section will develop formal notions of representation schemes (particularly, Brep and CSG), conversions (fundamental problems of separation and describability), and their impact on rendering algorithms. This leads to an exercise in designing direct rendering hardware for quadratic surfaces, both for Brep-based and CSG-based parallel processing. In particular, the architecture of the prototype RayCasting Engine (RCE), with over 2K parallel processors, for direct CSG raycasting will be discussed.

Controlled Blending of Procedural Implicit Surfaces
Implicit surfaces are becoming increasingly popular in geometric modeling. Procedurally defined implicit surfaces, in particular surfaces built around skeletons, provide an intuitive representation for many natural objects, and objects commonly used in geometric modeling. This paper presents several techniques that provide good control over the way different skeletally defined implicit surfaces...
متن کاملState-of-the-Art and Perspectives of Geometric and Implicit Modeling for Molecular Surfaces
This paper reviews state-of-the-art methods and presents new perspectives of implicit modeling, together with their relations with Constructive-SolidGeometry, for the computation and analysis of molecular surfaces. The link between implicit modeling techniques and the generation of molecular surfaces is possible thanks to the representation of the molecule as the iso-surface of an implicit func...
متن کاملThe intersection problems of parametric curve and surfaces by means of matrix based implicit representations
In this paper, we introduce and study a new implicit representation of parametric curves and parametric surfaces . We show how these representations which we will call the matrix implied, establish a bridge between geometry and linear algebra, thus opening the possibility of a more robust digital processing. The contribution of this approach is discussed and illustrated on important issues of g...
متن کاملNon-Manifold Implicit Surfaces Based on Discontinuous Implicitization and Polygonization
Implicit surfaces in 3D geometric modeling are limited to two manifolds because the corresponding implicit fields are usually defined by real-valued functions which bisect space into interior and exterior. We present a novel method of modeling non-manifold surfaces by implicit representation. Our method allows discontinuity of the field function and assesses the special meaning of the locus whe...

Implicit surface techniques provide useful tools for modeling and rendering smooth surfaces. Deriving implicit formulations for fractal representations extends the scope of implicit surface techniques to rough surfaces. Linear fractals modeled by recurrent iterated function systems may be defined implicitly using either geometric distance or escape time. Random fractals modeled using Perlin’s n...
