Gas phase atmospheric bromine photochemistry

چکیده

This paper reviews the current knowledge of gas phase bromine photochemistry and presents a budget study of atmospheric bromine species. The effectiveness of the ozone catalytic loss cycles involving bromine is quantified by considering their chain length and effectiveness. The chain effectiveness i a new variable defined as the chain length multiplied by the rate of the cycle's rate-limiting step. The chain effectiveness enables a fair comparison of different catalytic cycles involving species which have very different concentrations. This analysis clearly shows that below 25 km the BrO/C10 and BrO/HO2 cycles are among the most important ozone destruction cycles.

Models for the Formation and Transport of Reactive Mercury: Results for Florida, the Northeastern U.s. and the Atlantic Ocean

A photochemistry/transport model has been developed for elemental and reactive mercury (Hg) in the atmosphere and used to simulate events in the eastern U.S. and adjacent Atlantic Ocean. Results are compared to aircraft measurements in south Florida. The model is a modified form of CMAQ with a new solver for integrated gas-phase and aqueous chemistry, including O3 and precursors, sulfates, chlo...

The atmospheric degradation of 1-bromopropane (CH3CH2CH2Br): The photochemistry of bromoacetone

[1] The atmospheric degradation of 1-bromopropane and its degradation products are examined with respect to their ability to deplete stratospheric ozone. It is shown that the OH initiated oxidation of 1-bromopropane does not lead to long lived bromine containing species. Laboratory measurements of the UV absorption cross sections and photodissociation quantum yields of chloroacetone and bromoac...

Reactive halogens and their measurements in the troposphere

In the earth-ocean-atmosphere system, the halogenated species take part in the cycles of several key processes involving both gas and heterogeneous interactions. The atmospheric cycles of reactive halogens are very complex specifically for those emitted from natural sources. As far as their roles in the tropospheric chemistry, the halogen compounds particularly those containing bromine (Br) and...

Active molecular iodine photochemistry in the Arctic.

During springtime, the Arctic atmospheric boundary layer undergoes frequent rapid depletions in ozone and gaseous elemental mercury due to reactions with halogen atoms, influencing atmospheric composition and pollutant fate. Although bromine chemistry has been shown to initiate ozone depletion events, and it has long been hypothesized that iodine chemistry may contribute, no previous measuremen...

Halogens and their role in polar boundary-layer ozone depletion

During springtime in the polar regions, unique photochemistry converts inert halide salt ions (e.g. Br) into reactive halogen species (e.g. Br atoms and BrO) that deplete ozone in the boundary layer to near zero levels. Since their discovery in the late 1980s, research on ozone depletion events (ODEs) has made great advances; however many key processes remain poorly understood. In this article ...
