چکیده

p s l w Background. The objective of the present study was to ssess whether placing chest tubes on water seal after ulmonary lobectomy reduced the duration of air leak ompared with suction. Methods. One hundred forty-five patients who underent pulmonary lobectomy for lung cancer and with n air leak on the first postoperative day were prospecively randomly assigned to two groups: in group 1 (72 atients), chest tubes were placed on water seal on the orning of the first postoperative day; in group 2 73 patients), chest tubes were on continuous suction 20 cm H2O). Eighty percent of the patients who underent upper lobectomy had also a pleural tent procedure. reoperative, operative, and postoperative variables were ompared between the groups. Results. The two groups were evenly matched for reoperative and operative characteristics. No statistially significant differences were found between group 1

Alternate suction reduces prolonged air leak after pulmonary lobectomy: a randomized comparison versus water seal.

BACKGROUND The objective of the present study was to compare in a prospective randomized fashion two different management schemes for chest tubes after lobectomy: water seal versus alternate suction (suction overnight and water seal during the day). METHODS Ninety-four patients with air leak on the morning of the first postoperative day were randomly assigned to two groups: group 1 (water sea...

Regulated tailored suction vs regulated seal: a prospective randomized trial on air leak duration.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to compare the air leak duration of two regulated chest tube modes following pulmonary lobectomy. METHODS This is a prospective randomized trial on 100 consecutive pulmonary lobectomies (2010-11) performed for lung cancer. A single 24-French chest tube was connected to an electronic system capable of maintaining the pleural pressure within preset valu...

The use of a water seal to manage air leaks after a pulmonary lobectomy: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND The methods for managing chest drainage tubes during the postoperative period differ among thoracic surgeons and, as a result, the optimal method remains controversial. PATIENTS AND METHODS We reviewed 170 consecutive patients undergoing a pulmonary lobectomy for either primary lung cancer or metastatic lung cancer from January 1998 to December 2002. After the operation, the chest ...

The management of chest tubes in patients with a pneumothorax and an air leak after pulmonary resection.

BACKGROUND Placing chest tubes to water seal is superior for patients with an air leak, but when a patient has a pneumothorax and an air leak the best chest tube setting is unknown. METHODS This is a retrospective analysis of a prospective database on a consecutive series of patients who had a pneumothorax and air leak on the same day. Patients underwent elective pulmonary resection by one su...

External Suction versus Water Seal after Selective Pulmonary Resection for Lung Neoplasm: A Systematic Review

OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether external suction is more advantageous than water seal in patients undergoing selective pulmonary resection (SPR) for lung neoplasm. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Whether external suction should be routinely applied in postoperative chest drainage is still unclear, particularly for lung neoplasm patients. To most surgeons, the decision is based on their clinical expe...
