چکیده

[1] Monthly U.S. tornado numbers are here related to observation-based monthly averaged atmospheric parameters. Poisson regression is used to form an index which captures the climatological spatial distribution and seasonal variation of tornado occurrence, as well as year-to-year variability, and provides a framework for extended range forecasts of tornado activity. Computing the same index with predicted atmospheric parameters from a comprehensive forecast model gives some evidence of the predictability of monthly tornado activity. Citation: Tippett, M. K., A. An Empirical Relation between U.S. Tornado Activity and Monthly Environmental Parameters

In previous work the authors demonstrated an empirical relation, in the form of an index, between U.S. monthly tornado activity andmonthly averaged environmental parameters. Here a detailed comparison ismade between the index and reported tornado activity. The index is a function of two environmental parameters taken from the North American Regional Reanalysis: convective precipitation (cPrcp) a...

Convective Modes for Significant Severe Thunderstorms in the Contiguous United States. Part III: Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes

A gridded, hourly, three-dimensional environmental mesoanalysis database at the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), based on objectively analyzed surface observations blended with the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) model-analysis fields and described in Parts I and II of this series, is applied to a 2003–11 subset of the SPC tropical cyclone (TC) tornado records. Distributions of environmental convective ...

Simulation of the Tornado Hazard in the U

On average more than 1000 tornado touchdowns hit the continental U.S. every year causing significant human and economic losses. In order to manage tornado risk, we need to assess tornado hazard, the subsequent damage, and the resulting loss. This paper presents a methodology for tornado hazard assessment, which is an important step in the management of risk. For this purpose, a simulation appro...

The Statistical Severe Convective Risk Assessment Model

This study introduces a system that objectively assesses severe thunderstormnowcast probabilities based on hourly mesoscale data across the contiguous United States during the period from 2006 to 2014. Previous studies have evaluated the diagnostic utility of parameters in characterizing severe thunderstorm environments. In contrast, the present study merges cloud-to-ground lightning flash data...

A Bayesian modelling framework for tornado occurrences in North America.

Tornadoes represent one of nature's most hazardous phenomena that have been responsible for significant destruction and devastating fatalities. Here we present a Bayesian modelling approach for elucidating the spatiotemporal patterns of tornado activity in North America. Our analysis shows a significant increase in the Canadian Prairies and the Northern Great Plains during the summer, indicatin...
