Size Effect in Brittle Failure of Unreinforced Pipes
نویسنده
چکیده
Unreinforced concrete pipes basically can fail in two modes: beam failure and ring failure. According to the existing test data, the nom· inal stress at beam failure is much less than that at ring failure. Fur· thermore, the nominal stress for either failure mode decreases as the pipe diameter or thickness increases. These size effects can be de· scribed in a unified manner by means of the recently established sizeeffect law for failures which are preceded by the formation of microcracking zones. A simple formula involving the size effect is proposed and is justified by comparisons with existing test data.

Damage Accumulation in Unreinforced Masonry Due to Seismic Loading
Masonry has low cohesive strength and is susceptible to the brittle failure, when subjected to induced tensile stresses. It fails due to lateral tensile stresses even when masonry prisms are tested in uni-axial static compression and the stress-strain curve remains almost linear up to failure. Although masonry normally resists compressive forces, under lateral in-plane cyclic loads some parts o...
متن کاملTemperature Effect on Creep and Fracture Behaviors of Nano-SiO2-composite and AlSi12Cu3Ni2MgFe Aluminum Alloy
In the presented article, the temperature effect was studied on creep properties and fracture behaviors of AlSi12Cu3Ni2MgFe aluminum-silicon alloys, unreinforced and reinforced with SiO2 nano-particles. For such objective, standard specimens were fabricated by gravity casting and stir-casting methods, for aluminum alloys and nano-composites, respectively. Then, force-controlled creep...
متن کاملInfluence of Long-term Annealing on Residual Stress Distribution and Quasi-brittle Failure Properties of Talcum Reinforced Pipe Grade Polyproyplene
In this study a polypropylene material with talcum reinforcement used for sewer pipes has been subjected to an annealing procedure at 80°C, roughly 60°C above the actual application temperature, in air for a time period of 18 months. As expected, examination of the material showed no significant decrease in mechanical or fracture mechanical properties due to the temperature exposure. However, s...

This paper presents a macro model to predict unreinforced masonry structures in plane behavior. The model is based on the concept of multilaminate theory. In the past, the method has been used to model behavior of soil, disregarding the cohesion and the tensile strength. Regarding its mathematical base, and the possibility of applying in other cases, this method is used to predict the ultimate ...
متن کاملConsequences of Ignoring or Mis-Judging the Size Effect
Except for huge unreinforced structures, Weibull’s statistical size effect is weak in concrete structures. The size effect source is principally energetic, caused by stress redistribution due to a large fracture process zone size or large cracks formed before maximum load. It is shown that an unbiased statistical analysis of the existing database for shear of R.C. beams without stirrups support...
