چکیده

We examine a model of hadronic diffractive scattering which interpolates between perturbative QCD and non-perturbative fits. We restrict the perturbative QCD re-summation to the large transverse momentum region, and use a simple Regge-pole parametrization in the infrared region. This picture allows us to account for existing data, and to estimate the size of the perturbative contribution to future diffractive measurements. At LHC and SSC energies, we find that a cutoff BFKL equation can lead to a measurable perturbative component in traditionally soft processes. In particular , we show that the total pp cross section could become as large as 228 mb (160 mb) and the ρ parameter as large as 0.23 (0.24) at the SSC (LHC).

Perturbative Qcd Corrections to the Soft Pomeron ∗

We study the interface between soft and hard QCD at high energy and small momentum transfer. At LHC and SSC energies, we find that a cutoff BFKL equation leads one to expect a measurable perturbative component in traditionally soft processes. We show that the total cross section could become as large as 175 mb (122 mb) and the ρ parameter 0.40 (0.25) at the SSC (LHC).

Diffraction at Hera and Implications for Tevatron and Lhc

We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC. One of the most important experimental results from the DESY ep coll...

Hard Diffraction — 20 Years Later

The idea of diffractive processes with a hard scale involved, to resolve the underlying parton dynamics , was published 1985 and experimentally verified 1988. Today hard diffraction is an active research field with high-quality data and new theoretical models. The trend from Regge-based pomeron models to QCD-based parton level models has given insights on QCD dynamics involving perturbative glu...

CMS results on soft diffraction

Diffractive interactions are characterized by the presence of at least one non-exponentially suppressed large rapidity gap (lrg) in the final state, defined as a region in pseudorapidity devoid of particles. The origin of lrgs is attributed to a color-singlet exchange with vacuum quantum numbers, referred to as Pomeron (IP ) exchange. Soft diffractive interactions (with no hard scale) cannot be...

LHC Phenomenology for Physics Hunters

Welcome to a first set of notes for my 2008 TASI lectures on the exciting topic of ‘tools and technicalities’ (original title). Technically, LHC physics is really all about perturbative QCD, no matter if you are looking at signals or at backgrounds. When we try to look for interesting signatures at the LHC we instantly get killed by QCD. Therefore, I will mostly discuss QCD issues which arise f...
