Constraints on the Low-Energy Cutoff in the Electron Distribution of the PKS 0637–752 Jet

چکیده
We re-analyze the Chandra ACIS spectrum of the kpc-scale jet in PKS 0637–752 to investigate the possible low energy cutoff in the relativistic electron spectrum producing the non-thermal radiation in the scenario of inverse Compton emission off the cosmic microwave background. This was among the first objects targeted by the Chandra Observatory and gives a unique opportunity to study the low energy X-ray emission free of detector contamination. As previously reported in the literature, the spectrum can be fit by a power law, with the slope predicted by the radio spectrum, modified by low energy absorption through the Galaxy as determined from the spectrum of the quasar core and by HI 21 cm observations. We obtain a marginally better fit with an model of inverse Compton emission produced by an electron population that exhibits a cutoff at γmin δ10 between about 50 and 80 (assuming Γ = δ). This range for γmin is higher than has previously been assumed in broad-band spectral fits to the jet emission. The observed optical flux can be used to place a lower limit on γmin; the constraint is not very strong, but does suggest that γmin must be higher than 1 to avoid overproducing the optical emission. We investigate the effect of uncertainties in the column density for galactic absorption as well as the calibration of Chandra for these early observations. Finally, we discuss the implication of these limits on the jet luminosity in this source. SLAC-PUB-12620 Revised -November 2008 Published in the Astrophysical Journal

Jet of PKS 0637 – 752 : Inverse Compton Radiation from the Cosmic Microwave
We propose that the X-ray emission detected by Chandra from the 100-kiloparsec-scale jet of PKS 0637–752 is produced through inverse Compton scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We analyze the physical state of the jet and show that inverse Compton scattering from the CMB is consistent with equipartition for a moderate beaming of the emission, with Doppler factor δ ∼ 10. The pow...

The core-dominated radio-loud quasar PKS 0637-752 (z = 0.654) was the first celestial object observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, offering the early surprise of the detection of a remarkable X-ray jet. Several observations with a variety of detector configurations contribute to a total exposure time with the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS; Garmire et al. 2000, in prepar...

Long Baseline Array imaging of the z=0.663 broad line radio galaxy PKS 1421–490 reveals a 400 pc diameter high surface brightness hotspot at a projected distance of approximately 40 kpc from the active galactic nucleus. The isotropic X-ray luminosity of the hotspot, L2−10 keV = 3× 10 ergs s, is comparable to the isotropic X-ray luminosity of the entire X-ray jet of PKS 0637–752, and the peak ra...
متن کاملLarge scale jets in AGN: multiwavelength mapping
X–ray emission from large scale extragalactic jets is likely to be due to inverse Compton scattering of relativistic particles off seed photons of both the cosmic microwave background field and the blazar nucleus. The first process dominates the observed high energy emission of large scale jets if the plasma is moving at highly relativistic speeds and if the jet is aligned with the line of sigh...
متن کاملRuling out Ic/cmb X-rays in Pks 0637-752 and the Implications for Tev Emission from Large-scale Quasar Jets
The Chandra X-ray observatory has discovered dozens of resolved, kiloparsec-scale jets associated with powerful quasars in which the X-ray fluxes are observed to be much higher than the expected level based on the radio-optical synchrotron spectrum. The most popular explanation for the anomalously high and hard X-ray fluxes is that these jets do not decelerate significantly by the kiloparsec sc...
