An Improved Monte Carlo Algorithm for Elastic Electron Backscattering from Surfaces

چکیده
The problen of the backscattering of electrons from metal targets is subject of extensive theoreticel and experimental work in surface analysis. We are interested in the angular distribution of the backscattered electrons. The flow of electrons satisfies an integral equation, which might be solved by Monte Carlo methods. The Monte Carlo approach, used by A.Dubus, A. Jablonski and S.Tougaard in their paper “Evaluation of theoretical models for elastic electron backscattering from surfaces” (1999), is based upon direct simulation of the physical process. We introduce different weights in the Monte Carlo algorithm, which decrease the variance. We also introduce artificial absorption probability and demonstrate significant improvements in the efficiency of the algorithm. Results of extensive numerical tests are presented.

Interpretation of Electron Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry for Hydrogen Quantification
In the last few years several papers have appeared showing the capabilities of Electron Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (eRBS) to quantify the H content at surfaces. The basis of the H detection in this technique relies on the difference in recoil energy of the incident electrons depending on the mass of the atoms located at the surface that act as scatter centers. In this paper we addre...

متن کاملElectron inelastic mean free paths and surface excitation parameters for GaAs
Surface excitation parameters and inelastic mean free paths of electrons are of importance in the analyses of surface sensitive electron spectroscopies. When probe electrons are near the surface of a solid or the interface of an overlayer system, electron inelastic mean free paths become depth-dependent. These mean free paths and surface excitation parameters were calculated for electrons cross...

متن کاملELRADGEN: Monte Carlo generator for radiative events in elastic electron–proton scattering
We discuss the theoretical approach and practical algorithms for simulation of radiative events in elastic ep–scattering. A new Monte Carlo generator for real photon emission events in the process of elastic electron–proton scattering is presented. We perform a few consistency checks and present numerical results.
