Dynamic Trading Strategies and Portfolio Choice

چکیده
Traditional mean-variance efficient portfolios do not capture the potential wealth creation opportunities provided by predictability of asset returns. We propose a simple method for constructing optimally managed portfolios that exploits the possibility that asset returns are predictable. We implement these portfolios in both single and multi-period horizon settings. We compare alternative portfolio strategies which include both buy-and-hold and fixed weight portfolios. We find that managed portfolios can significantly improve the mean-variance trade-off, in particular, for investors with investment horizons of three to five years. Also, in contrast to popular advice, we show that the buy-and-hold strategy should be avoided.

Dynamic Portfolio Choice with Linear Rebalancing Rules∗
We consider a broad class of dynamic portfolio optimization problems that allow for complex models of return predictability, transaction costs, trading constraints, and risk considerations. Determining an optimal policy in this general setting is almost always intractable. We propose a class of linear rebalancing rules and describe an efficient computational procedure to optimize with this clas...
متن کاملOptimal portfolio allocation with imposed price limit constraint
Daily price limits are adopted by many securities exchanges in countries such as the USA, Canada, Japan and various other countries in Europe and Asia, in order to increase the stability of the financial market. These limits confine the price of the financial asset during all trading stages of any trading day to a range, usually determined based on the previous day’s closing price. In this pape...
متن کاملDiscovery of Multi-spread Portfolio Strategies for Weakly-cointegrated Instruments Using Boosting-based Optimization
Increasing complexity of the modern market dynamics requires new quantitative frameworks for the discovery of stable portfolio strategies. Important requirements include the ability of the coupled and self-consistent optimization of the dynamic strategies and asset allocations as well as robust built-in mechanisms for the strategy complexity control to ensure acceptable out-of-sample performanc...
متن کاملPortfolio Choice with Market Closure and Implications for Liquidity Premia
Most existing portfolio choice models ignore the prevalent periodic market closure and the fact that market volatility is significantly higher during trading periods. We find that market closure and the volatility difference across trading and nontrading periods significantly change optimal trading strategies. In addition, we numerically demonstrate that transaction costs can have a first order...
متن کاملA novel approach to dynamic portfolio trading system using multitree genetic programming
Dynamic portfolio trading system is used to allocate one’s capital to a number of securities through time in a way to maximize the portfolio return and to minimize the portfolio risk. Genetic programming (GP) as an artificial intelligence technique has been used successfully in the financial field, especially for the forecasting tasks in the financial markets. In this paper, GP is used to devel...
