چکیده

The salting-out effect produced by the addition of potassium phosphate, K3PO4 to aqueous solutions of water-miscible ionic liquids, viz. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate, or 1-alkyl-3methylimidazolium chloride (alkyl = butyl, octyl or decyl) is investigated. The effects are analyzed using both the corresponding temperature–composition pseudo-binary and composition ternary phase diagrams. Different regions of liquid-liquid and solid-liquid phase demixing are mapped. The phase behavior is interpreted taking into account the complex and competing nature of the interactions between the ionic liquid, the inorganic salt and water. In the case of solutions containing 1-octylor 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, the smaller magnitude of the salting-out effects is explained in terms of the possibility of self-aggregation of the ionic liquid.

Effect of salts on the solubility of ionic liquids in water: experimental and electrolyte Perturbed-Chain Statistical Associating Fluid Theory†

Due to scarce available experimental data, as well as due to the absence of predictive models, the influence of salts on the solubility of ionic liquids (ILs) in water is still poorly understood. To this end, this work addresses the solubility of the IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C4C1im][NTf2]), at 298.15 K and 0.1 MPa, in aqueous salt solutions (from 0.1 to...

Effect of polyvalent ions in the formation of ionic-liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems.

Two main approaches were combined aiming at evaluating the impact of polyvalent salt cations on the formation of ionic-liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems (ABS): (i) experimental determination of a large array of ternary phase diagrams composed of sodium-, magnesium-, and aluminum-based salts with 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids and (ii) determination of the ions speciation in...

Extraction of Biomolecules Using Phosphonium-Based Ionic Liquids + K3PO4 Aqueous Biphasic Systems

Aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) provide an alternative and efficient approach for the extraction, recovery and purification of biomolecules through their partitioning between two liquid aqueous phases. In this work, the ability of hydrophilic phosphonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) to form ABS with aqueous K(3)PO(4) solutions was evaluated for the first time. Ternary phase diagrams, and respective...

Vapor-Pressure Osmometry and Conductivity Determination of Salting-Out Effects in Aqueous Surface-Active Ionic Liquid 1-Dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium Bromide Solutions

Systematic studies on the vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) and conductometric properties of aqueous solutions of model surface-active ionic liquid 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C12mim]Br) are performed in the absence and presence of a large series of electrolytes in order to achieve a deeper understanding about the molecular mechanism behind the specific salt effect on the aggregation be...

Critical assessment of the formation of ionic-liquid-based aqueous two-phase systems in acidic media.

In this work, the ability of Na(2)SO(4) and ionic liquids to induce the formation of acidic aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) is investigated. Ternary phase diagrams, tie lines, and tie-line lengths for several systems were determined and reported at 298 K and atmospheric pressure. It is here shown that among the ionic liquids studied only those containing long alkyl side chains at the ions and/...
