Ethnobotanicals of the Family Euphorbiaceae Used by the Ethnic Groups of Purulia District, West Bengal, India

Purulia is the westernmost district in West Bengal, India and is inhabited by a large number of tribes. A study of the ethnobotanical uses of plants belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family was carried out in this area using questionnaires, and personal interviews. A total number of 18 plant species used by different ethnic groups were identified. The major ethnic groups represented in this study are the Santhali, Bhumijs, Mundas, Oraon, Birhor, Mal Pahariya, Kharia and Ho. During the investigation, plants belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family were found to be used in human and animal healthcare, house building, as food, fodder and fish poison.
