چکیده

We report an optical frequency standard at 657 nm based on laser-cooled/trapped Ca atoms. The system consists of a novel, compact magneto-optic trap which uses 50 mW of frequency-doubled diode laser light at 423 nm and can trap > 10 Ca atoms in 20 ms. High resolution spectroscopy on this atomic sample using the narrow 657 nm intercombination line resolves linewidths (FWHM) as narrow as 400 Hz, the natural linewidth of the transition. The spectroscopic signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced by an order of magnitude with the implementation of a “shelving” detection scheme on the 423 nm transition. Our present apparatus achieves a fractional frequency instability of 5 × 10−14 in 1 s with a potential atom shot-noise-limited performance of 10−16 τ−1/2 and excellent prospects for high accuracy. Kilohertz-resolution spectroscopy of cold atoms with an optical frequency comb.

We have performed sub-Doppler spectroscopy on the narrow intercombination line of cold calcium atoms using the amplified output of a femtosecond laser frequency comb. Injection locking of a 657-nm diode laser with a femtosecond comb allows for two regimes of amplification, one in which many lines of the comb are amplified, and one where a single line is predominantly amplified. The output of th...

Absolute frequency measurement of the neutral 40Ca optical frequency standard at 657 nm based on microkelvin atoms

We report an absolute frequency measurement of the optical clock transition at 657 nm in 40Ca with a relative uncertainty of 7.5 x 10-15 , one of the most accurate frequency measurements of a neutral atom optical transition to date. The frequency (455986240494135.8 ± 3.4) Hz was measured by stabilizing a diode laser system to a spectroscopic signal derived from an ensemble of 106 atoms cooled i...

A polarisation spectrometer locked diode laser for trapping cold atoms

We have modelled and used polarisation spectroscopy to lock a very compact, high-performance extended cavity diode 85 Ž X . laser system to the Rb Fs3 to F s4 transition. The laser has a linewidth of 135 kHz. Using this system we have trapped and cooled 1.5=10 Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap. Atoms remained continuously trapped in the MOT for several minutes. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All...

Sub-kilohertz laser linewidth narrowing using polarization spectroscopy.

We identify several beneficial characteristics of polarization spectroscopy as an absolute atomic reference for frequency stabilization of lasers, and demonstrate sub-kilohertz laser spectral linewidth narrowing using polarization spectroscopy with high-bandwidth feedback. Polarization spectroscopy provides a highly dispersive velocity-selective absolute atomic reference based on frequency-depe...

Calcium Optical Frequency Standardresearch at Ptb

At PTB we have developed an optical frequency standard based on laser cooled calcium atoms. A laser is frequencystabilized to the intercombination transition at a wavelength of 657 nm by means of time-domain atom interferences. The dependence of its frequency on various parameters was investigated by using different excitation schemes corresponding to phase sensitive and frequency sensitive ato...
