چکیده
We present a thermo-economic analysis of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for waste heat recovery. A case study for a heat source temperature of 150 ̋C and a subcritical, saturated cycle is performed. As working fluids R245fa, isobutane, isopentane, and the mixture of isobutane and isopentane are considered. The minimal temperature difference in the evaporator and the condenser, as well as the mixture composition are chosen as variables in order to identify the most suitable working fluid in combination with optimal process parameters under thermo-economic criteria. In general, the results show that cost-effective systems have a high minimal temperature difference ∆TPP,C at the pinch-point of the condenser and a low minimal temperature difference ∆TPP,E at the pinch-point of the evaporator. Choosing isobutane as the working fluid leads to the lowest costs per unit exergy with 52.0 €/GJ (∆TPP,E = 1.2 K; ∆TPP,C = 14 K). Considering the major components of the ORC, specific costs range between 1150 €/kW and 2250 €/kW. For the zeotropic mixture, a mole fraction of 90% isobutane leads to the lowest specific costs per unit exergy. A further analysis of the ORC system using isobutane shows high sensitivity of the costs per unit exergy for the selected cost estimation methods and for the isentropic efficiency of the turbine.

We present a thermo-economic evaluation of binary power plants based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for geothermal power generation. The focus of this study is to analyse if an efficiency increase by using zeotropic mixtures as working fluid overcompensates additional requirements regarding the major power plant components. In the present paper, we consider the employment of working-fluid mixtures in organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems with respect to thermodynamic and heat-transfer performance, component sizing and capital costs. The selected working-fluid mixtures promise reduced exergy losses due to their non-isothermal phase-change behaviour, and thus improved cycle efficiencies and power outputs over their re...

The purpose of this research is to investigate a zeotropic working fluid mixture in terms of its performance in an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and the heat transfer characteristics in an air-cooled condenser (ACC). The motivation of this study is that it is well known that the use of a mixture improves the efficiency of an ORC system. However, the behaviour of the mixture in the condensers is n...
متن کاملMethods of Increasing Net Work Output of Organic Rankine Cycles for Low-Grade Waste Heat Recovery
In heat engine design, the usual objective is to maximize thermal efficiency. However, for heat engines applied to waste heat recovery, an appropriate objective is to maximize power production by converting as much of the waste heat as possible into work. An organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is particularly well-suited to waste heat recovery because of its compactness relative to a steam Rankine cycl...
متن کاملEffect of Working-fluid Mixtures on Organic Rankine Cycle System Performance: Heat Transfer and Cost Analysis
A thermodynamic limitation of single-component working fluids in organic Rankine cycles (ORCs) is the large exergy destruction (and, consequently, useful power loss) associated with evaporation and condensation. Due to their non-isothermal phasechange behaviour, non-azeotropic working-fluid mixtures have shown reduced exergy losses, leading to improved cycle efficiencies and power outputs. Thes...
