چکیده

W e draw on mathematical results from topology to develop quantitative methods for polymeric materials to characterize the relationship between polymer chain entanglement and bulk viscoelastic responses. We generalize the mathematical notion of the Linking Number and Writhe to be applicable to open (linear) chains. We show how our results can be used in practice by performing fully three-dimensional computational simulations of polymeric chains entangled in weaves of a few distinct topologies and with varying levels of chain densities. We investigate relationships between our topological characteristics for chain entanglement and viscoelastic responses by performing Lees-Edwards simulations of the rheology over a broad range of frequencies. Our topological measures of entanglement indicate the global topology is the dominant factor in characterizing mechanical properties. We find an almost linear relation between the mean absolute Writhe Wr and the loss tangent and an almost inverse linear relation between the mean absolute Periodic Linking Number LKP and the loss tangent. These results indicate the potential of our topological methods in providing a characterization of the level of chain entanglement useful in understanding the origins of mechanical responses in polymeric materials.

Effects of Surface Viscoelasticity on Cellular Responses of Endothelial Cells

Background: One area of nanoscience deals with nanoscopic interactions between nanostructured materials and biological systems. To elucidate the effects of the substrate surface morphology and viscoelasticity on cell proliferation, fractal analysis was performed on endothelial cells cultured on nanocomposite samples based on silicone rubber (SR) and various concentrations of organomodified nano...

Abrasion Resistance of Polymer Nanocomposites – A Review

In order to be suitable for tribological applications, polymeric materials, which can usually exhibit mechanical strength, lightness, ease of processing, versatility and low cost, together with acceptable thermal and environmental resistances, have to show good abrasion and wear resistance. This target is not easy to achieve, since the viscoelasticity of polymeric materials makes the analysis o...

A brief review on the influences of nanotubes' entanglement and waviness on the mechanical behaviors of CNTR polymer nanocomposites

Invention of carbon nanotube (CNT) in the 1990s introduced a new class of materials whose extraordinary mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties seemed appealing enough to the research community to devote their time and effort for the purpose of analyzing composite materials reinforced by CNTs. Particularly, the marvelous stiffness of CNTs has made it possible to reach a high-modulus comp...

Counting polymer knots to find the entanglement length

Uncrossability of polymer chains in a melt gives rise to a restricted transverse motion of chains, which is represented by a confining ‘‘tube’’. Ultimately, the tube must be of topological origin. We propose two definitions of the tube diameter or entanglement length (Ne) in terms of the properties of topologically equilibrated melts of rings: (1) the probability of a ring in such a melt being ...

Functionalized and Electrospun Polymeric Materials as High-Performance Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cell: A Review

Proton exchange membranes (PEM) for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) have main drawbacks which are methanol permeability, reduced proton conductivity and the cost of the membrane. This paper reviews different polymeric materials such as fluorinated, non-fluorinated, acid-base complex, and composite membranes for DMFC. Currently, nonfluorinated membranes gain a lot of atte...
