چکیده

When an elastic filament spins in a viscous incompressible fluid it may undergo a whirling instability, as studied asymptotically by Wolgemuth, Powers, Goldstein [1]. We use the Immersed Boundary (IB) method to study the interaction between the elastic filament and the surrounding viscous fluid as governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and to determine the nature of the bifurcation, which turns out to be subcritical. This allows the study of the whirling motion when the shape of the filament is very different from the unperturbed straight state.

Twirling and whirling: viscous dynamics of rotating elastic filaments.

Motivated by diverse phenomena in cellular biophysics, including bacterial flagellar motion and DNA transcription and replication, we study the overdamped nonlinear dynamics of a rotationally forced filament with twist and bend elasticity. Competition between twist injection, twist diffusion, and writhing instabilities is described by coupled PDEs for twist and bend evolution. Analytical and nu...

Twirling and Whirling: Viscous Dynamics of Rotating Elastica

Motivated by diverse phenomena in cellular biophysics, including bacterial flagellar motion and DNA transcription and replication, we study the overdamped nonlinear dynamics of a rotationally forced filament with twist and bend elasticity. Competition between twist injection, twist diffusion, and writhing instabilities is described by a novel pair of coupled PDEs for twist and bend evolution. A...

Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of a rotating bacterial flagellum.

Many types of bacteria propel themselves using elongated structures known as flagella. The bacterial flagellar filament is a relatively simple and well-studied macromolecular assembly, which assumes different helical shapes when rotated in different directions. This polymorphism enables a bacterium to switch between running and tumbling modes; however, the mechanism governing the filament polym...

Natural Frequency of Rotating Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with Considering Gyroscopic Effect

This paper investigates the bending vibration of rotating single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) based on nonlocal theory. To this end, the rotating SWCNTs system modeled as a beam with a circular cross section and the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (EBT) is applied with added effects such as rotary inertia, gyroscopic effect and rotor mass unbalance. Using nonlocal theory, two coupled sixth orde...
