Nuclear radio emission in megaparsec-size radio galaxies

چکیده

We present high resolution radio observations of the nuclear radio emission in a sample of eight radio galaxies having Megaparsec sizes, using the European VLBI network at 18 cm. At a resolution of 25 mas we detect all the giant radio galaxies from our sample. Among themDA 240 and 1331−099 were imaged for an extended period. These observations reveal a twin-jet structure for DA 240 and one-sided core-jet morphology in 1331−099. The implications of our results in the context of the unification of quasars and powerful radio galaxies are discussed. Our results are consistent with the suggestion that powerful radio galaxies are the unbeamed counterparts of quasars.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

A Complete Sample of Megaparsec-size Double Radio Sources from Sumss

We present a complete sample of megaparsec-size double radio sources compiled from the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS). Almost complete redshift information has been obtained for the sample. The sample has the following defining criteria: Galactic latitude |b| > 12. 5, declination δ < −50 and angular size > 5. All the sources have projected linear size larger than 0.7 Mpc (assumin...

Examining the Seyfert – Starburst Connection with Arcsecond Resolution Radio Continuum Observations

We compare the arcsecond-scale circumnuclear radio continuum properties between five Seyfert and five starburst galaxies, concentrating on the search for any structures that could imply a spatial or causal connection between the nuclear activity and a circumnuclear starburst ring. No evidence is found in the radio emission for a link between the triggering or feeding of nuclear activity and the...

What Powers the Compact Radio Emission in Nearby Elliptical and S 0 Galaxies ? Luis

Many nearby early-type (elliptical and S0) galaxies contain weak (milli-Jansky level) nuclear radio sources on scales a few hundred parsecs or less. The origin of the radio emission, however, has remained unclear, especially in volume-limited samples that select intrinsically less luminous galaxies. Both active galactic nuclei and nuclear star formation have been suggested as possible mechanism...

Compact Radio Cores and Nuclear Activity in Seyfert Galaxies

Using recent high–resolution (<0.1”) radio observations of a large sample of Seyfert galaxies (Roy et al., 1994), we analyze the relations between their compact radio core emission and several nuclear and host galaxy properties (galaxy morphology, optical, infrared, X-ray, extended radio emissions, interaction parameters, and some emission line properties). We apply survival analysis techniques...
