BIOFUELS PRODUCTION FROM HYDROTREATING OF VEGETABLE OIL USINGSUPPORTED NOBLE METALS, AND TRANSITION METAL CARBIDE AND NITRIDEbyHUALI WANGMay 2012Advisors: Dr. K. Y. Simon Ng and Dr. Steven O. SalleyMajor: Chemical EngineeringDegree: Doctor of PhilosophyThe focus of this research is to prepare non-sulfided hydrotreating catalysts, supportednoble metal and transition metal carbide/ nitride, and evaluate their hydrocracking activities andselectivities by using soybean oil as the feedstock. For comparison study, catalytic cracking ofsoybean oil over a commercialized ZSM-5 was investigated. However, steady state could not bereached because significant amounts of tar and coke were generated during the reaction though ahigh yield (21%) of jet fuel was obtained from the process. Compared to the catalytic crackingprocess, less tar and coke were formed during the hydrocracking process and stable continuous flowreaction was obtained by using the bifunctional Ru/ZSM-5 catalyst. 16% yield of jet fuel, which iscomparable to yields over commercialized sulfided NiMo catalysts while at a much lower pressureof 650 psi was produced. A 20 29% diesel yield was also obtained during the process. But cokewas the issue with this noble metal catalyst. In the following stage, novel bi-functional catalysts, NiMo carbide or nitride supported onZSM-5, zeolite β, USY, γ-alumina oxide, and Al-SBA-15 were prepared by the temperature-programmed reaction method and the effects of process parameters on catalytic hydrocracking ofsoybean oil were investigated. 100% conversion of soybean oil was attained under the 650 psi and

Metal Carbides for Biomass Valorization

Transition metal carbides have been utilized as an alternative catalyst to expensive noble metals for the conversion of biomass. Tungsten and molybdenum carbides have been shown to be effective catalysts for hydrogenation, hydrodeoxygenation and isomerization reactions. The satisfactory activities of these metal carbides and their low costs, compared with noble metals, make them appealing alter...

Synergies between bio- and oil refineries for the production of fuels from biomass.

As petroleum prices continue to increase, it is likely that biofuels will play an ever-increasing role in our energy future. The processing of biomass-derived feedstocks (including cellulosic, starch- and sugar-derived biomass, and vegetable fats) by catalytic cracking and hydrotreating is a promising alternative for the future to produce biofuels, and the existing infrastructure of petroleum r...

Molybdenum Carbide Supported Platinum Catalysts for Water-Gas Shift: A Theoretical and Experimental Investigation

Introduction Early transition metals carbides are catalytically active in a variety of reactions, such as isomerization reactions, hydrogenation reactions, water-gas shift (WGS), hydrocarbon steam reforming, etc. [1]. Our group recently developed a method to load metal catalysts onto high surface area carbide and nitride supports, and demonstrated that Pt supported on Mo carbide (Mo2C) possesse...

Determination of Metal Contents in Edible Vegetable Oils Produced in Iran Using Microwave-assisted Acid Digestion

The concentration of heavy metals in vegetable oils is an important criterion for the assessment of oil qualities with regard to freshness, keeping properties, storage and their influence on human nutrition and health. Trace heavy metals in vegetable oils are known to have an effect on the rate of oil oxidation. In this work, the contents of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn),...
