The Ground Sloth Megalonyx from Pleistocene Deposits of the Old Crow Basin, Yukon, Canada

چکیده
The bear-sized ground sloth Megalonyx, endemic to North America, was widespread during the Pleistocene, reaching as far north as Alaska, Yukon, and Northwest Territories. Twenty-two specimens collected from 10 localities in the Old Crow Basin, northern Yukon, include several bones that can be referred to Jefferson’s ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) on the basis of the distinctive morphology of the upper and lower caniniform teeth. All of the Yukon specimens are relatively small, suggesting a geological age earlier than Wisconsinan—probably Sangamonian. The Alaskan, Yukon, and Northwest Territories records imply that the species occupied a broad east-west range in northwestern North America during a warm phase of the late

Nitrogen isotopes suggest a change in nitrogen dynamics between the Late Pleistocene and modern time in Yukon, Canada
A magnificent repository of Late Pleistocene terrestrial megafauna fossils is contained in ice-rich loess deposits of Alaska and Yukon, collectively eastern Beringia. The stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope compositions of bone collagen from these fossils are routinely used to determine paleodiet and reconstruct the paleoecosystem. This approach requires consideration of changes in...

Field investigations at Dugway Proving Ground in western Utah have produced new data on the chronology and human occupation of late Pleistocene and early Holocene lakes, rivers, and wetlands in the Lake Bonneville basin. We have classified paleo-river channels of these ages as “gravel channels” and “sand channels.” Gravel channels are straight to curved, digitate, and have abrupt bulbous ends. ...
متن کاملThe ginsberg experiment: modern and prehistoric evidence of a bone-flaking technology.
The discovery of butchered and modified bones of extinct Pleistocene fauna from Old Crow Flats, Yukon Territory, and the Dutton and Selby sites, Colorado, provides some of the earliest evidence for man in the New World. However, the significance of these discoveries rests entirely on the ability to determine whether these remains were modified by man. The results of experiments of elephant butc...
متن کاملArid climate 2 . 5 Ma in the Plio - Pleistocene Valdarno Basin ( Northern Apennines , Italy )
Distinctive, eolian-dominated sandy deposits 35 m thick exposed along the SW margin of the Plio-Pleistocene Valdarno Basin in the Northern Apennines, Italy, reflect an unusually arid period in the region. Paleomagnetic investigation and Ar/Ar dating of a tephra layer, 10 m above the eolian sand, suggest that the sand was deposited between about 2.7 and 2.4 Ma. This age is coeval with the global...
