Carbohydrates of the Lens in Normal and Precataractous States.
نویسنده
چکیده
The free carbohydrates of the lens are discussed, with particular attention to the normal concentrations. Simple sugar derivatives such as the sugar alcohols are similarly treated. Such metabolic intermediates as the sugar phosphates and the more complex adenosine derivatives are mentioned, as are structural components containing sugar moieties. Experimental procedures, such as special diets, ivhich alter lens sugar levels are briefly outlined.

Nuclear magnetic resonance microscopic ocular imaging for the detection of early-stage cataract.
A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) microscopic ocular imaging was performed at 7.0 Tesla to investigate its usefulness in the detection of early-stage cataracts. For this study, galactose cataracts were generated in experimental rabbits through diet (35% galactose), and enucleated eyes were imaged at various times after initiation of the diet. In previous studies using a 0.6 Tesla conventional ...
متن کاملClinical detection of precataractous lens protein changes using dynamic light scattering.
OBJECTIVE To use dynamic light scattering to clinically assess early precataractous lens protein changes. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study in 380 eyes of 235 patients aged 7 to 86 years with Age-Related Eye Disease Study clinical nuclear lens opacity grades 0 to 3.8. A dynamic light-scattering device was used to assess alpha-crystallin, a molecular chaperone protein shown to bind ...
متن کاملUltrastructure and acid phosphatase activity in hereditary cataracts of deer mice.
Lenses of cataract-webbed (cw) Peromyscus maniculatus were examined by electron microscopy and compared to age-matched normal deer mouse lenses. Precataractous lenses of offspring of cw/cw matings were examined and compared to early cataract development in the opposite eye of the same animal. The earliest ultrastructural change leading to disturbance of lens transparency was cell fusion and for...
متن کاملEvalauation of Laminin Expression during Mouse Lens Development
Introduction: Among the components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and basement membrane (BM), laminitis heterotrimeric glycoprotein (laminin) and collagen type IV are the most important. In a previous study we have examined the role of collagen type IV in the developing lens capsule. The present study aims to determine the appearance and distribution of laminin in the BM and ECM of lenses ...
متن کاملEffect of dietary taurine supplementation on GSH and NAD(P)-redox status, lipid peroxidation, and energy metabolism in diabetic precataractous lens.
PURPOSE To evaluate changes in glutathione and NAD(P)-redox status, taurine and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, glucose utilization, and energy metabolism in diabetic precataractous lenses and to assess whether these changes can be prevented with dietary taurine supplementation. METHODS The experimental groups included control and streptozotocin-diabetic rats with a 3-week duration of diabetes ...
