Matching gaps between misaligned pointers demonstrates that lines, both transverse and parallel, enhance Poggendorff illusions.

چکیده
Day and Kasperczyk (1985) and Day, Watson, and Jolly (1986) claimed that the Poggendorff illusion, in a Tolansky-type vertical bisection task, is no smaller when the line transversals are replaced with dots and the oblique parallels are removed, despite other evidence that transversals and parallels contribute significantly to the illusion. Wenderoth, O'Connor, and Johnson (1986) showed indirectly that both factors are important by instructing subjects to avoid a misunderstanding of the task, which was inferred to have occurred in the experiments of Day and his colleagues. In Experiment 1 ofthe present study, we demonstrated directly that this misunderstanding occurred when Day's instructions were used. In Experiment 2 we used a different, matching method for measuring standard Poggendorff effects, a method that avoids possible misinterpretations of the bisection task. In Experiment 3 we used this method to show directly that both line (vs. dot) transversals and oblique parallels (vs, no parallels) significantly increase illusions. The method of measurement used here should prove to be a useful tool in testing and placing constraints on theories of the Poggendorff effect.

Characterisation of the misalignment and misangulation components in the Poggendorff and corner-Poggendorff illusions.
In the Poggendorff illusion, two colinear segments abutting obliquely on an intervening configuration (often consisting of two long parallel lines) appear misaligned. We report here the results of a component analysis of the illusion and several of its variants, including in particular the 'corner-Poggendorff' illusion, and variants with a single arm. Using a nulling method, we determined an 'o...

The Poggendorff illusion refers to the phenomenon that the human brain misperceives a diagonal line as being apparently misaligned once the diagonal line is interrupted by two parallel edges, and the size of illusion is negatively correlated with the angle of interception of the oblique, i.e. the sharper the oblique angle, the larger the illusion. This optical illusion can be produced by both r...
متن کاملThe Poggendorff illusion: a bias in the estimation of the orientation of virtual lines by second-stage filters
The veridical perception of collinearity between two separated lines is distorted by two parallel lines in the space between them (the Poggendorff illusion). This paper tests the conjecture that the perception of collinearity of separated lines is based on a two-stage mechanism. The first stage encodes the orientation of the virtual line between the proximal terminators of the target lines. The...

متن کاملIllusions as neuro-signs
Orientation is a dimension much studied in visual neuroscience. Many single cells in the visual cortex respond to lines or edges in specific orientations, and in monkey cortex these cells are specific for lines within ±20° of the preferred orientation. One class of illusion, involving perception of orientation, can direct us towards interpretations of neural function (in this series, referred t...
