Experimental Comparison of the Impact of Air-Side Particulate Fouling on the Thermo-Hydraulic Performance of Microchannel and Plate-Fin Heat Exchangers

چکیده
In this study, the air-side pressure drop and heat transfer performance of plate-fin and microchannel coils were tested under clean and fouled conditions. The heat exchangers were tested with two different types of dust, ASHRAE Standard Dust and Arizona Road Test Dust. The ASHRAE dust was found to have a very significant impact on the pressure drop of the microchannel heat exchanger, increasing the air-side pressure drop of the microchannel heat exchanger by over 200% for a dust injection of 267g (1612.5 g/m 2 ). Fouling of the microchannel heat exchanger with Arizona Road Test Dust was not found to increase the air-side pressure drop of the microchannel heat exchanger but was found to decrease the heat transfer rate by more than 10%. In addition, from studies of the evolution of the air-side pressure drop during the fouling process, it is seen that microchannel coils with louvered fins with fin pitch below 2.0 mm were significantly more prone to fouling than louvered heat exchangers with larger fin pitch. Particulate fouling of the wavy-plate-fin heat exchanger resulted in significantly lower reductions in heat transfer and increase in air-side pressure drop than for the microchannel heat exchanger.

متن کاملA Literature Review On Heat Exchanger Air Side Fouling In Heating, Ventilation And Air-conditioning (HVAC) Applications
This paper provides a review on the fouling mechanism and its effect onto the performance of finned tube heat exchangers in HVAC systems. Fouling tends to degrade the performance of heat exchangers by decreasing the heat transfer coefficient and increasing the air-side pressure drop across the heat exchangers. Air side fouling depends on a number of factors on the air side, including type and c...
متن کاملA Generalized Effectiveness-NTU Based Variable Geometry Microchannel Heat Exchanger Model
Microchannel heat exchangers (MCHXs) are now widely used in the HVAC&R industry. Similar to tube-fin heat exchangers used mainly in the indoor units, the innovative variable geometry microchannel heat exchanger will further reduce its compact size and enhance its performance. Variable geometry refers to a heat exchanger with different tube and fin surfaces within the same core with one or more ...

In this article, stream flow effectivness is based on hydraulic network studied in the shell-side of a shell and tube heat exchange as a case study. For an appropriate heat exchangers rating design to meet a specified duty, it's better to consider each stream flow separately. Using the hydraulic network principals, a set of the correlations for calculating different stream flow rates in the cro...
