A Probabilistic Ranking Learner for Phonotactics

چکیده
1.2 The Input 1.2.1 Surface forms • Consists of surface phonetic forms to which the children may or may not have attached a meaning (so we can’t assume any sort of semantic bootstrapping, morphemic knowledge, etc). • We can’t assume knowledge of relationships among forms, and therefore we can’t assume knowledge of underlying forms. • This means positive data only—what forms exist—whereas phonotactic learning is also trying to determine what forms don’t exist.

The Error-driven Ranking Model of the Acquisition of Phonotactics: How to Keep the Faithfulness Constraints at Bay
A problem which arises in the theory of the error-driven ranking model of the acquisition of phonotactics is that the faithfulness constraints need to be promoted but should not be promoted too high. This paper motivates this technical problem and shows how to tune the promotion component of the re-ranking rule so as to keep the faithfulness constraints at bay. Sections 1-2 introduce the algori...
متن کاملWhy Adult Language Learning is Harder: A Computational Model of the Consequences of Cultural Selection for Learnability
This paper reports on a limited model of language evolution that incorporates transmission noise and errorful learning as sources of variation. The model illustrates how the adaptation of language to the statistical learning mechanisms of infants may be a factor in the apparent ceiling on adult second language achievement. The model is limited in its focus to only phonotactics because the proba...
متن کاملComplexity of the Acquisition of Phonotactics in Optimality Theory
The problem of the acquisition of Phonotactics in OT is shown to be not tractable in its strong formulation, whereby constraints and generating function vary arbitrarily as inputs of the problem. Tesar and Smolensky (1998) consider the basic ranking problem in Optimality Theory (OT). According to this problem, the learner needs to find a ranking consistent with a given set of data. They show th...
متن کاملThe Error-driven Ranking Model of the Early Stage of the Acquisition of Phonotactics: an Initial Result on Restrictiveness *
Nine-month-old infants are already sensitive to the distinction between licit and illicit forms (Jusczyk et al. 1993). They thus display knowledge of the target adult phonotactics at an early stage when morphology is plausibly still lagging behind (Hayes 2004) and the acquisition of the native language lexicon has barely begun (Fenson et al. 1994). How can this early stage of the acquisition of...
متن کاملDo we use L1 probabilistic phonotactics in L2 listening?
Abstract: The present study examined whether Cantonese-English bilingual listeners made use of their L1 probabilistic phonotactics in the segmentation process of English continuous speech (L2). Previous research in different languages demonstrated that probabilistic phonotactics could serve as a useful cue to locate the possible word boundary in continuous speech. The use of these kinds of info...
