Impacts on phytoplankton biomass and productivity in the Pacific Northwest during the warm ocean conditions of 2005

چکیده
[1] Delayed onset of the spring transition and upwellingfavorable winds in the Pacific Northwest during springsummer 2005 resulted in a positive temperature anomaly and a pronounced negative anomaly in surface phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and primary productivity. Compared to time periods before and after the warm water event, total biomass was reduced by ca. 50% along a hydrographic line extending seaward from Grays Harbor, WA (47 N), with a concomitant decrease of ca. 40% in surface and depth-integrated primary productivity. Associated with these declines in biomass and productivity was a change in mean phytoplankton size, with >50% of the nearshore assemblage less than 5mm in size during the warm event, compared to <30% during more normal conditions. Unlike higher trophic levels, the phytoplankton rapidly recovered with the onset of upwelling, returning to more typical size structure, biomass, and productivity within one week of the onset of upwelling-favorable winds. Zooplankton anomalies in the California Current system before and during the warm ocean conditions of 2005
[1] Zooplankton in the California Current had large anomalies in biomass and composition in 2005. The zone most strongly affected extended from northern California to southern British Columbia, where zooplankton biomass was low from spring through autumn, community composition showed reduced dominance by northern origin taxa, and life cycles of some species shifted to earlier in the year. متن کاملAn Iron-Based Ecosystem Model of the Central Equatorial Pacific
The central and eastern equatorial Pacific region is characterized by lower than expected phytoplankton biomass and primary production given the relatively high ambient nitrate concentrations. These unusual conditions have spawned several field programs and laboratory experiments to determine why this high nitrate-low chlorophyll pattern persists in this region. To synthesize the results from t...
متن کاملOptimal Environmental Conditions and Anomalous Ecosystem Responses: Constraining Bottom-up Controls of Phytoplankton Biomass in the California Current System
In Eastern Boundary Current systems, wind-driven upwelling drives nutrient-rich water to the ocean surface, making these regions among the most productive on Earth. Regulation of productivity by changing wind and/or nutrient conditions can dramatically impact ecosystem functioning, though the mechanisms are not well understood beyond broad-scale relationships. Here, we explore bottom-up control...
متن کاملSimulations of Marine Ecosystem Response to Climate Variation with a One Dimensional Coupled Ecosystem/Mixed Layer Model
Existing observations are inadequate to identify and to understand the processes by which oceanic and atmospheric variability affect the marine biota at climate scales. To aid in the identification and study of important processes, we employ a one-dimensional coupled mixed layer / planktonic ecosystem (Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton-Detritus) model of the subarctic Pacific Ocean. Increasing...
متن کاملSeasonal variability of size-classes of phytoplankton biomass in a sub-tropical embayment, Muscat, Sea of Oman
The contribution of three different cell size classes of picoplankton: 0.74-2 μm, nanoplankton:2–20 μm and microplankton, >20 μm of the phytoplankton population and their relationship to environmental conditions were studied over two annual cycles at one station in Bandar Khyran Bay, Sea of Oman, from May 2006 to August 2008. Nanoplankton was the most important class contributing 54.4% to tot...
