Magnetic field models from energetic particle data at Neptune

چکیده
The locations of features in the Voyager 2 energetic particle data from Neptune are combined with uncertainties n the multipole expansion f the planetary magnetic field to derive new magnetic field models that are consistent both with various interpretations of the particle features and with the magnetic field data. While assumptions as to the origin of the features must be made, they do not provide sufficient constraints to obtain significant ew information any of the unknown multipole coefficients. However, the magnetic L shell positions of the particle f atures, which are interpreted primarily as absorption signatures of Neptune's satellites, can, in general, be brought into agreement with expected values.

The phase diagram of water and the magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune
The interior of giant planets can give valuable information on formation and evolution processes of planetary systems. However, the interior and evolution of Uranus and Neptune is still largely unknown. In this paper, we compare water-rich three-layer structure models of these planets with predictions of shell structures derived from magnetic field models. Uranus and Neptune have unusual non-di...
متن کاملA study of magnetic drift motion of particles around the equatorial plasmapause by using the cluster observation
On August 7, 2003 the Cluster spacecraft moved through the dayside magnetosphere. The energetic particle spectrometer on board Cluster provided measurements of an extensive range of energy. Besides, satellite measurements of geomagnetic field showed a gradient magnetic field. It is known that an inhomogeneity of the magnetic field leads to a drift of charged particles. In this paper, the drift ...
متن کاملPropagation of Solar Energetic Particles in Three-dimensional Interplanetary Magnetic Fields
This paper presents a model calculation of solar energetic particle propagation in a three-dimensional interplanetary magnetic field. The model includes essentially all the particle transport mechanisms: streaming along magnetic field lines, convection with the solar wind, pitch-angle diffusion, focusing by the inhomogeneous interplanetary magnetic field, perpendicular diffusion, and pitch-angl...
متن کاملFeatures of energetic particle radial profiles inferred from geosynchronous responses to solar wind dynamic pressure enhancements
Determination of the radial profile of phase space density of relativistic electrons at constant adiabatic invariants is crucial for identifying the source for them within the outer radiation belt. The commonly used method is to convert flux observed at fixed energy to phase space density at constant first, second and third adiabatic invariants, which requires an empirical global magnetic field...
متن کاملParticle transport and energization associated with disturbed magnetospheric events
Energetic particle flux enhancement events observed by satellites during strongly disturbed events in the magnetosphere (e.g., substorms, storm sudden commencements, etc.) are studied by considering interaction of particles with Earthward propagating electromagnetic pulses of westward electric field and consistent magnetic field of localized radial and azimuthal extent in a background magnetic ...
