Normative rational agents - A BDI approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper proposes an approach on how to accommodate norms to an already existing architecture of rational agents. Starting from the famous BDI model, an extension of the BDI execution loop will be presented; it will address such issues as norm instantiation and norm internalization, with a particular emphasis on the problem of norm consistency. A proposal for the resolution of conflicts between newly occurring norms, on one side, and already existing norms or mental states, on the other side, will be described. While it is fairly difficult to imagine an evaluation for the proposed architecture, a challenging scenario inspired form the science-fiction literature will be used to give the reader an intuition of how the proposed approach will deal with situations of normative conflicts.

BDI Agents: From Theory to Practice
The study of computational agents capable of rational behaviour has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Theoretical formalizations of such agents and their implementations have proceeded in parallel with little or no connection between them. Tkis paper explores a particular type of rational agent, a BeliefDesire-Intention (BDI) agent. The primary aim of this paper is to integrat...
متن کاملCommunication Breakdown? Reasoning about Language and Rational Agents
This paper examines different approaches to rationality in analytic philosophy and AI, in the light of Bermúdez’s proposal that a full account of rationality must aim to explain how agents can both select and explain actions, as well as assessing them against some normative standard. We briefly survey instrumental, linguistic and discursive accounts of rationality, and conjecture that Habermas’...
متن کاملImplementing BDI-like Systems by Direct Execution
While the Belief, Desire, Intention (BDI) framework is one of the most influential and appealing approaches to rational agent architectures, a gulf often exists between the high-level BDI model and its practical realisation. In contrast, the Concurrent METATEM language, being based upon executable formal specifications, presents a close link between the theory and implementation, yet lacks some...
متن کاملBDI+C — an architecture for normative, autonomous agents
In this paper, we describe a novel agent architecture for normative multi-agent systems which is based on multi-context systems. It models the three modalities of Rao and Georgeff’s BDI agents as individual contexts and adds a fourth one for commitments. This new component is connected to all other mental attitudes via two sets of bridge rules, injecting formulae into it and modifying the BDI c...
متن کاملSemantical considerations on intention dynamics for BDI agents
The BDI paradigm is a powerful means for constructing intelligent agents in terms of their beliefs, d esires, and i ntentions. For this paradigm to bear its full potential, it must incorporate considerations from rationality. This paper develops a set of postulates for intelligent agents who deliberate about their intentions and actions. However, even simple postulates can lead to paradoxical r...
