Error Correction in Vergence Eye Movements: Evidence Supporting Hering’s Law

چکیده
Pure vergence stimuli fall strictly along the midline or “cyclopean” axis and while rare in natural viewing, are easy to create in the laboratory. They are particularly useful for studying the neural control of disparity vergence eye movements. Responses to such stimuli should not contain version components, but two factors can lead to transient version components during a symmetrical vergence response. First, vergence responses often contain saccades (Levi et al., 1987; van Leeuwen et al. 1998; Zee et al. 1992; Collewijn, et al., 1995, Semmlow et al. 2008, 2009; Coubard and Koupola, 2008) and even a small saccade will generate a substantial deviation from the midline. Second, even if no saccades are present, responses to pure vergence stimuli are often asymmetrical because one eye moves faster than the other during the fusion initiating

Binocular eye movements during accommodative vergence.
Binocular eye position was monitored by the photoelectric technique during accommodative vergence. Contrary to previous reports indicating that accommodative vergence was a uniocular phenomenon, without exception, binocular accommodative vergence movements were recorded. The total vergence amplitude in the viewing eye was reduced, on the average. by approximately SSP, with respect to the vergen...

ABSTRACT Binocular eye movements form a finely-tuned system that requires accurate coordination of the oculomotor dynamics and supports the vergence movements for tracking the fine binocular disparities required for 3D vision, and are particularly susceptible to disruption by brain injury and other neural dysfunctions. Saccadic dynamics for a population of 84 diverse participants show tight coe...
متن کاملBinocular coordination of saccades: development, aging and cerebral substrate
Fine binocular coordination of saccades is essential for clear binocular vision, whatever the viewing distance. When saccading between targets at far distance (for example 400 cm), the saccade starts with visual axes almost parallel (small vergence angle); coordination of saccade allows the angle to be maintained. At near distance (for example 40 cm), the eyes converge; yet the saccades should ...
متن کاملInvariant body kinematics: I. Saccadic and compensatory eye movements
A new invariant formulation of 3D eye-head kinematics improves on the computational advantages of quaternions. This includes a new formulation of Listing’s Law parameterized by gaze direction leading to an additive rather than a multiplicative saccadic error correction with a gaze vector difference control variable. A completely general formulation of compensatory kinematics characterizes arbit...
متن کاملEvidence for separate control of slow version and vergence eye movements: support for Hering's Law
When a visual stimulus changes direction and distance simultaneously, Hering's Law argues that the resulting eye movements are the result of combined version and vergence control processes. Recently, it has been suggested that slow asymmetrical eye movements might be guided by monocular control processes wherein each eye is driven by its own retinal image. Experimental results presented here sh...
