Total Variation Processing of Images with Poisson Statistics

چکیده
This paper deals with denoising of density images with bad Poisson statistics (low count rates), where the reconstruction of the major structures seems the only reasonable task. Obtaining the structures with sharp edges can also be a prerequisite for further processing, e.g. segmentation of objects. A variety of approaches exists in the case of Gaussian noise, but only a few in the Poisson case. We propose some total variation (TV) based regularization techniques adapted to the case of Poisson data, which we derive from approximations of logarithmic a-posteriori probabilities. In order to guarantee sharp edges we avoid the smoothing of the total variation and use a dual approach for the numerical solution. We illustrate and test the feasibility of our approaches for data in positron emission tomography, namely reconstructions of cardiac structures with F-FDG and H2 O tracers, respectively.

Multilevel algorithm for a Poisson noise removal model with total-variation regularization
Many commonly used models for the fundamental image processing task of noise removal can deal with Gaussian white noise. However such Gaussian models are not effective to restore images with Poisson noise, which is ubiquitous in certain applications. Recently Le-Chartrand-Asaki derived a new data-fitting term in the variational model for Poisson noise. This paper proposes a multilevel algorithm...
متن کاملAn Efficient Computational Method for Total Variation-penalized Poisson Likelihood Estimation
Approximating non-Gaussian noise processes with Gaussian models is standard in data analysis. This is due in large part to the fact that Gaussian models yield parameter estimation problems of least squares form, which have been extensively studied both from the theoretical and computational points of view. In image processing applications, for example, data is often collected by a CCD camera, i...
متن کاملRichardson-Lucy algorithm with total variation regularization for 3D confocal microscope deconvolution.
Confocal laser scanning microscopy is a powerful and popular technique for 3D imaging of biological specimens. Although confocal microscopy images are much sharper than standard epifluorescence ones, they are still degraded by residual out-of-focus light and by Poisson noise due to photon-limited detection. Several deconvolution methods have been proposed to reduce these degradations, including...
متن کاملA Metropolis-hastings Method for Linear Inverse Problems with Poisson Likelihood and Gaussian Prior
Poisson noise models arise in a wide range of linear inverse problems in imaging. In the Bayesian setting, the Poisson likelihood function together with a Gaussian prior yields a posterior density function that is not of a well known form and is thus difficult to sample from, especially for large-scale problems. In this work, we present a method for computing samples from posterior density func...
متن کاملFast optimization for multichannel total variation minimization with non-quadratic fidelity
Total variation (TV) has been proved very successful in image processing, and it has been combined with various non-quadratic fidelities for non-Gaussian noise removal. However, these models are hard to solve because TV is non-differentiable and nonlinear, and non-quadratic fidelity term is also nonlinear and even non-differentiable for some special cases. This prevents their widespread use in ...
