Why is Broca's area involved in syntax?

چکیده

It is suggested that, rather than Broca's area playing its role in syntactic comprehension because its functions are a specialization those of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) or derived from sensori-motor functions of cortex from which it is evolutionarily descended, this region may be involved in this aspect of language because of its intrinsic neural organization.

Structural connectivity of Broca's area and medial frontal cortex

Despite over 140 years of research on Broca's area, the connections of this region to medial frontal cortex remain unclear. The current study investigates this structural connectivity using diffusion-weighted MRI tractography in living humans. Our results show connections between Broca's area and Brodmann's areas (BA) 9, 8, and 6 (both supplementary motor area (SMA) in caudal BA 6, and Pre-SMA ...

The neurology of syntax: language use without Broca's area.

A new view of the functional role of the left anterior cortex in language use is proposed. The experimental record indicates that most human linguistic abilities are not localized in this region. In particular, most of syntax (long thought to be there) is not located in Broca's area and its vicinity (operculum, insula, and subjacent white matter). This cerebral region, implicated in Broca's aph...

Are left fronto-temporal brain areas a prerequisite for normal music-syntactic processing?

An increasing number of neuroimaging studies in music cognition research suggest that "language areas" are involved in the processing of musical syntax, but none of these studies clarified whether these areas are a prerequisite for normal syntax processing in music. The present electrophysiological experiment tested whether patients with lesions in Broca's area (N=6) or in the left anterior tem...

Mapping syntax using imaging: problems and prospects for the study of neurolinguistic computation

The study of language in the brain is the study of the computations responsible for the structure and processing of language. Hemodynamic imaging techniques can make a contribution to this area, but only if paired with a theory of the underlying formal processes. Statements like 'syntax is mediated by Broca's area' are too coarse (cognitively and cytoarchitectonically) to constitute insights in...

The brain circuitry of syntactic comprehension.

Syntactic comprehension is a fundamental aspect of human language, and has distinct properties from other aspects of language (e.g. semantics). In this article, we aim to identify if there is a specific locus of syntax in the brain by reviewing imaging studies on syntactic processing. We conclude that results from neuroimaging support evidence from neuropsychology that syntactic processing does...
