Protease Injury in the Development of COPD*

چکیده

these last two presentations, one could conclude that the role of nutritional support, exercise, and anabolic agents needs to be evaluated in larger controlled clinical trials. The role of corticosteroids, which remains the only widely used anti-inflammatory drug used in the therapy of COPD, was reviewed in detail. The conclusions were fairly straight forward, namely that systemic corticosteroids appear to have a modest effect on decreasing the length of exacerbations in hospitalized patients, but clearly do not improve long-term outcome. Hence, long-term steroid use was not supported. Inhaled corticosteroids have recently been tested in several large multicenter studies that have shown a modest decrease in the number and duration of exacerbations, but do not prevent the decline in airway function. The take-home message for clinicians is that, while there is no immediate new effective wonder drug available to us, the future looks brighter and more exciting since more research is being done than ever before. It is our hope that these new interventions will be successful and available to our patients in the future.

Protease-Antiprotease Imbalance in Inflammatory Diseases in the Lung

We are very interested in the extensive research by Vernooy et al,1 who addressed the importance of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) in the pathogenesis and/or the development of COPD. It is likely to be important to evaluate the activity of the proteases rather than the expression of MMPs. Protease/antiprotease imbalance has also been postulated to be important in the pathogenesis of COPD. Howev...

Anti-inflammatory effect of Yu-Ping-Feng-San via TGF-β1 signaling suppression in rat model of COPD

Objective(s): Yu-Ping-Feng-San (YPFS) is a classical traditional Chinese medicine that is widely used for treatment of the diseases in respiratory systems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) recognized as chronic inflammatory disease. However, the molecular mechanism remains unclear. Here we detected the factors involved in transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1)/Smad2 si...

Design of new potent HTLV-1 protease inhibitors: in silico study

HTLV-1 and HIV-1 are two major causes for severe T-cell leukemia disease and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). HTLV-1 protease, a member of aspartic acid protease family, plays important roles in maturation during virus replication cycle. The impairment of these proteases results in uninfectious HTLV-1virions.Similar to HIV-1protease deliberate mutations that confer drug resistance on...

Genomics of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); Exploring the SNPs of Protease-Antiprotease Pathway

The COPD has been an important respiratory condition that affects people worldwide and its incidence has been alarming. The increasing incidence of this disorder has been attributed to global industrialization and environmental pollution. Although the exposures to environmental pollutants and smoking have been important triggers, the genetic component of individuals has been shown to be importa...
