Effect of cryoprotectants on the activity of hemolymph nucleating agents in physical solutions.

چکیده
‘Many insects accumulate polyhydric alcohols, particularly glycerol, sorbitol, and carbohydrates during fall and winter. In the larval hymenopteran Brachon cephi, Salt (11) found glycerol concentrations as high as 5 m and supercooling points as low as -47°C. The production of these substances is correlated with increased cold hardiness in both freezing tolerant and freezing intolerant species. The mode of action of these substances remains partly unclear, but they are believed to promote cold hardiness in a number of ways. In freezing intolerant insects, which have a high capacity for supercooling, increasing polyol levels have been shown to depress the supercooling points by more than twice the corresponding melting point depression (13), by a mechanism which at least in part must be noncolligative. The low supercooling points of these insects have also been interpreted as a result of a complete removal of all nucleating particles from their body fluid (12, 15). In addition, Baust and Morrissey (1, 2) suggested that the cryoprotectants may serve to “mask” potential ice nucleation loci. Preliminary studies with the freezing intolerant lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata provided support for this hypothesis when it was found that glucose appeared to “mask” nucleators during cyclical temperature fluctuations. For freezing intolerant forms this “masking” would allow for extensive supercooling and the avoidance of freezing,

Expected nucleation effects of carboxylic acid salts on poly(1-butene)
9,10-Dihydro-9,10-ethano-anthracene-11,12-dicarboxylic acid disodium salt (DHEAS) was synthesized and used as a nucleating agent for poly(1-butene) (iPB). The isothermal crystallization kinetics of iPB having different nucleating agents were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The results showed that the nucleating agents increased the...

Abstract: In the present work, effect of the nucleating agent such as TiO2, ZrO2, P2O5, Ye2O3 and CeO2 in single, double, triple and fourth systems on the crystallization behavior of various compositions was studied. Using differential thermal analysis (DTA), the composition of Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (LAS) was optimized and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), three point flexural strength, har...
متن کاملA method for quantitative determination of ice nucleating agents in insect hemolymph.
The presence of nucleating agents in the hemolymph appears to be a characteristic feature of insects tolerant to freezing (10). Such nucleators have been found in the hemolymph of insects of several phylogenetic orders, i.e., Coleoptera (4, 8, 9, 1 l), Diptera (7), and Hymenoptera (5). The physiological function of these nucleators is suggested to be to induce a protective extracellular freezin...

Abstract: The application of inexpensive materials such as copper, zinc, lead, iron and steel slag in manufacturing of glass and glass-ceramic products in construction industry, lining materials as anti-corrosion and anti-abrasion coatings in metals and etc, has led to considerable progress in glass technology in recent years. The composition of slag glass-ceramics is mainly located in the ...
متن کاملEffect of freezing and dehydration on ion and cryoprotectant distribution and hemolymph volume in the goldenrod gall fly, Eurosta solidaginis.
Extracellular freezing and dehydration concentrate hemolymph solutes, which can lead to cellular injury due to excessive water loss. Freeze tolerant larvae of the goldenrod gall fly, Eurosta solidaginis, may experience extreme cold and desiccation in winter. To determine whether larvae employ protective mechanisms against excessive cellular water loss we examined the effect of extracellular fre...
