Observations on the Composition of the Contrail

چکیده
The possible effect of contrails in modifying the weather is reconsidered in the light of information obtained from ground-level contrails in Alaska. It appears likely that inadvertent cloud seeding b y jet aircraft may be of the same order of magnitude as that attained in commercial cloud seeding operations. Further investigation is needed; but in the meantime, the possibility of contrail contamination should be kept in mind when evaluating the results of seeding operations.

Relating observations of contrail persistence to numerical weather analysis output
The potential for using high-resolution meteorological data from two operational numerical weather analyses (NWA) to diagnose and predict persistent contrail formation is evaluated using two independent contrail observation databases. Contrail occurrence statistics derived from surface and satellite observations between April 2004 and June 2005 are matched to the humidity, vertical velocity, wi...
متن کاملProcess-based simulation of contrail cirrus in a global climate model
[1] Aviation induces changes in global cirrus cloudiness by producing contrails. In the past, line shaped contrail coverage has been parameterized relying on the scaling of contrail formation frequency to observed values. Coverage due to irregularly shaped contrail cirrus, that develop from line shaped contrails, could not be estimated with this method. We introduce a process-based parameteriza...
متن کاملLife Cycle of Aircraft Contrails by Synergetic Use of Metop and Msg Observations
The objective of the project is to study the transformation of aircraft contrails into cirrus clouds, so-called contrail cirrus; to determine the lifetime of the contrail cirrus and the evolution of their optical properties; and thus, to quantify the complete life cycle of an aircraft contrail, from its formation to the final dissolution of the cirrus cloud. The formation of new cirrus clouds o...
متن کاملImportance of representing optical depth variability for estimates of global line-shaped contrail radiative forcing.
Estimates of the global radiative forcing by line-shaped contrails differ mainly due to the large uncertainty in contrail optical depth. Most contrails are optically thin so that their radiative forcing is roughly proportional to their optical depth and increases with contrail coverage. In recent assessments, the best estimate of mean contrail radiative forcing was significantly reduced, becaus...
متن کاملAircraft Groundings: Evidence of Jet Contrail Influence on Climate
The grounding of all commercial aircraft within U.S. airspace for the 3-day period following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks provides a unique opportunity to study the potential role of jet aircraft contrails in climate. Contrails are most similar to natural cirrus clouds due to their high altitude and strong ability to efficiently reduce outgoing infrared radiation. However, they typic...
