چکیده

Biologically inspired design (BID) can be viewed as an example of analogy-based design. Existing models of analogy-based design do not fully account for the generation of complex solutions in BID, especially those which contain compound solutions. In this paper we develop a conceptual framework of compound analogical design that explains the generation of compound solutions in design through opportunistic interaction of two related processes: analogical transfer and problem decomposition. We apply this framework to analyze three sample biologically inspired designs that contain compound solutions.

On the Analogical Roots of Biologically Inspired Design

Biologically inspired design is an approach to design that espouses the adaptation of functions and mechanisms in biological sciences to solve engineering design problems. Biologically inspired design is inherently analogical in nature, yet our understanding of its analogical basis is limited. In this paper we present an observational study that describes an intricate episode of biologically in...

Beyond analogy: A model of bioinspiration for creative design

Is biologically inspired design only an analogical transfer from biology to engineering? Actually, nature does not always bring “hands-on” solutions that can be analogically applied in classic engineering. Then, what are the different operations that are involved in the bioinspiration process and what are the conditions allowing this process to produce a bioinspired design? In this paper we mod...

Biologically Inspired Design: a Macrocognitive Account

Biologically inspired engineering design is an approach to design that espouses the adaptation of functions and mechanisms in biological sciences to solve engineering design problems. We have conducted an in situ study of designers engaged in biologically inspired design. Based on this study we develop here a macrocognitive information-processing model of biologically inspired design. We also c...

Effective Analogical Transfer Using Biological Descriptions Retrieved with Functional and Biologically Meaningful Keywords

While biology is well recognized as a good source of analogies for engineering design, the steps of 1) retrieving relevant analogies and 2) applying these analogies are not trivial. Our recent work translated the functional terms of the Functional Basis into biologically meaningful keywords that can help engineers search for and retrieve relevant biological phenomena for design, addressing step...

Analogical Transfer of Non-Isomorphic Source Problems

In analogical problem solving, non-isomorphic source/target relations are typically only investigated in contrast to the ideal case of isomorphism. We propose to give a closer look to different types of non-isomorphic source/target relations and varying degrees of structural overlap. We introduce a measure of graph distance which captures the “size” of partial isomorphism between two structures...
