Canadian agri-environmental indicators related to land quality: integrating census and biophysical data to estimate soil cover, wind erosion and soil salinity

چکیده
A Canadian initiative to define and estimate indicators of the relationship between agricultural activities and environmental quality has been under way since 1993. This paper focuses on those indicators related to land quality and highlights the use of GIS to reconfigure land use and climatic data to a soil landscape spatial model in order to apply models of soil degradation. The 1981 and 1991 Census of agriculture data from a cadastral base and climatic indices from iso-contour maps are related to the soil landscapes of Canada to identify trends in the amount of soil cover, the risk of soil erosion by wind and the risk of soil salinization. Results indicate that soil cover has improved by about 11% through the use of conservation tillage and crop residue management and reduced summerfallowing, and that the risk of wind erosion in the prairies has decreased by 7% in the 10 years. The risk of soil salinization has remained constant on 93% of cropland, decreased on 7% and increased on <1%. It appears that the improvements in soil quality protection have occurred despite some shifts to more intensive cropping systems. Crown Copyright © 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The Role of Local Settlements in Combating Desertification of Isfahan's Desert Rangelands
Undoubtedly, land degradation linked to desertification causes a decrease in qualitative and quantitative features of natural resources. This research aimed to assess land desertification by local residents and their role in controlling desertification in Isfahan province, Iran in 2016. The criteria were soil climate, vegetation, erosion, and demography. The indicators of soil texture, stone fr...
متن کاملAgri-environmental Soil Quality Indicator in the European Perspective
Executive Summary Soil quality is an account of the soil's ability to provide ecosystem and social services through its capacities to perform its functions under changing conditions (after Tóth et al. 2007.) The concept of soil quality expressed by this definition allows practical applications with regards to targeted social and/or ecosystem services, including agri-environmental services. The ...

Due to population growth, global warming, changing precipitation patterns, and decreasing precipitation, water and soil are two of the most important human issues. Water and soil resources management in arid and semi-arid regions is one of the methods that can solve water and soil issues. Covering the soil surface with permeable natural materials can reduce water and wind erosion and evaporatio...

Soil erosion and sediment yield from watersheds confine sustainable use of land resources and is supposed as one of the most critical environmental issues. Prediction of storm wise soil erosion and sediment yield is very important, especially in arid and semiarid regions due to small number of events and high intensity of rainfall. Evaluation of soil erosion by existing models is needed as an i...
