چکیده

A spatially continuous representation of presettlement forest patterns has broad applications, including local and landscape-scale vegetation reconstruction, landscape change, and analysis of effects of human impact on land use change. Typically, presettlement vegetation patterns are reconstructed using historical survey data in the form of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) layers using a variety methods, i.e., environmental modeling and spatial interpolation techniques [Wang and Larsen, 2006]. Given that historical data processing involves aggregation of spatial data obtained from multiple sources and types, landscape pattern reconstruction is inevitably accompanied by uncertainty originating from data transformation and representation errors. It is therefore essential to provide a model of uncertainty associated with predicted values at locations where survey data are unavailable, as well as to evaluate the impact of such uncertainty on the consequent analysis and classification results. Despite the increased interest in characterizing and quantifying uncertainty originating from aggregating spatially explicit information for landscape reconstruction, there is limited literature regarding uncertainty analysis on reconstructed surfaces. Even those limited efforts have focused only on various aspects of classification uncertainty; for example, Bolliger and Mladenoff [2005] proposed a method to quantify spatial classification uncertainty using fuzzy approaches whose main focus was on a measure of uncertainty associated with classification procedures, while taking for granted uncertainty arising in the data preprocessing procedure. In the current paper, we propose a geostatistical framework to quantify uncertainty associated with a set of tree species occurrence probability at a set of unsurveyed locations, and assess the impact of the uncertainty associated with the reconstructed map of presettlement forest patterns on the overall uncertainty regarding the classification results.

The forests of presettlement New England, USA: spatial and compositional patterns based on town proprietor surveys

Aim This study uses the combination of presettlement tree surveys and spatial analysis to produce an empirical reconstruction of tree species abundance and vegetation units at different scales in the original landscape. Location The New England study area extends across eight physiographic sections, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The data are drawn from 389 origin...

Assessment of geostatistical and interpolation methods for mapping forest dieback intensity in Zagros forests

During recent years, oak decline has been widely spread across Brant’s oak (Quercus Brantii Lindl.) stands in the Zagros Mountains, Western Iran, which caused large-area forest dieback in several sites. Mapping the intensity and spatial distribution of forest dieback is essential for developing management and control strategies. This study evaluated a range of geostatistical and interpolation m...

Assessment of forest structure and their spatial patterns are essential for managing and evaluation of forest ecosystems. This study was conducted at the Zagros forests in Kermanshah to evaluate the forest structural characteristics and their spatial distribution. Data was collected from 25 plots (400 m2) in a 100 m × 100 m systematic sampling grid. The spacing between plots was 50 m. In each p...

Spatial Analysis of Central Zagros Forest Fragmentations for Conservation and Restoration Purposes (A Case Study: Posht kuh Forests, Fereydoonshahr, Isfahan Province)

In the current study, conservation strategies were employed for the spatial analysis of forest fragmentation and field assessment approaches in a forest landscape of Central Zagros, in the western part of Isfahan province, Iran. Vegetation and soil properties were accordingly studied in 15 forest sites with various densities including dense, semi-sparse and sparse-forests with 839.2 km2. In the...

Evaluation of Crategus sp. spatial pattern in the Central Zagros Forest

Spatial pattern of trees can possibly indicate stand history, population dynamics, and species competition. This research was investigated in the Chahartagh forest reserve, Ardal region, chaharmehal and Bakhtiari Province, Central Zagros forest, and southwest Iranian state. In this study 53 hectare of the study area was selected and perfect inventory.  Information includes the position and kind...
