چکیده
Voice IP (VoIP) over wireless local area network (WLAN) is a topic of great interest in the research arena. To investigate what are the performance limitations in establishing VoIP calls over WLAN networks we performed some simulations. We show in this paper these simulation results in ad-hoc and infrastructure WLAN networks, working under ideal and real conditions. Measures and graphs of packet delay, packet jitter and lost packet rate show the performance limitations when VoIP runs over WLAN. The basic question posed was: how many VoIP calls can be established over a WLAN 802.11b network?

Simultaneous VoIP Calls Capacity Over an 802.11 Ad Hoc Network
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over a wireless local area network (WLAN) is already an important Internet application. The data rate required for each VoIP stream depends on the used codec and the TCP/IP protocol overhead that typically add 98 bytes in the codec payload. As the G.726 codec has 80-byte payload (32 kb/s), the overhead represents 55% of the total packet size (178 bytes). This...

In multirate ad-hoc networks, mobile stations usually adapt their transmission rates to the channel conditions. This paper investigates the behavior of IEEE 802.11b/g cards in a multirate ad-hoc environment. WLAN network cards from different vendors are analyzed. The theoretical upper bound estimation of the throughput in multirate ad-hoc networks is derived. The measurement scenarios and obtai...
متن کاملSolutions to Performance Problems in VoIP over 802 . 11 Wireless LAN 1
VoIP over WLAN is poised to become an important Internet application. However, two major technical problems that stand in the way are 1) low VoIP capacity in WLAN; 2) unacceptable VoIP performance in the presence of coexisting traffic from other applications. With each VoIP stream typically requiring less than 10 Kbps, an 802.11b WLAN operated at 11 Mbps could in principle support more than 500...
متن کاملMedia Streaming Performance in a Portable Wireless Classroom Network
This paper presents empirical measurements of wireless media streaming traffic in an IEEE 802.11b wireless ad hoc network. The results show that the IEEE 802.11b WLAN can support up to 8 clients with good media streaming quality, with each client receiving a separate 400 kbps video stream and 128 kbps audio stream. With 9 clients, the WLAN is overloaded, and performance degrades for all clients...
متن کاملThe Feedback Based Mechanism for Video Streaming Over Multipath Ad Hoc Networks
Ad hoc networks are multi-hop wireless networks without a pre-installed infrastructure. Such networks are widely used in military applications and in emergency situations as they permit the establishment of a communication network at very short notice with a very low cost. Video is very sensitive for packet loss and wireless ad-hoc networks are error prone due to node mobility and weak links. H...
