A Note on Cumulative Stereotypical Reasoning

چکیده
We address the problem of providing a logical characterization of reasoning based on stereotypes. Following [6] we take a semantic perspective and we base our model on a notion of semantic distance. While still leading to cumulative reasoning, our notion of distance does, unlike Lehmann’s, allow reasoning under inconsistent information.

Stereotypical Reasoning: Logical Properties
Stereotypical reasoning assumes that the situation at hand is one of a kind and that it enjoys the properties generally associated with that kind of situation. It is one of the most basic forms of nonmonotonic reasoning. A formal model for stereotypical reasoning is proposed and the logical properties of this form of reasoning are studied. Stereotypical reasoning is shown to be cumulative under...

متن کاملComprehensive Decision Modeling of Reverse Logistics System: A Multi-criteria Decision Making Model by using Hybrid Evidential Reasoning Approach and TOPSIS (TECHNICAL NOTE)
In the last two decades, product recovery systems have received increasing attention due to several reasons such as new governmental regulations and economic advantages. One of the most important activities of these systems is to assign returned products to suitable reverse manufacturing alternatives. Uncertainty of returned products in terms of quantity, quality, and time complicates the decis...
متن کاملFrom Natural Language to KM Representations
This working note sketches out, in a rather skeletal form, a model of language understanding using the knowledge representation language KM. In this model, KM “prototypes” encode stereotypical expectations about the world, and language understanding involves constructing a scene from prototypes which best matches (a possible interpretation of) the input text. As a starting point towards this, w...
متن کاملSmarter than we think: when our brains detect that we are biased.
Human reasoning is often biased by stereotypical intuitions. The nature of such bias is not clear. Some authors claim that people are mere heuristic thinkers and are not aware that cued stereotypes might be inappropriate. Other authors claim that people always detect the conflict between their stereotypical thinking and normative reasoning, but simply fail to inhibit stereotypical thinking. Hen...
