The Dinosaurs and the Ring

چکیده

Cognitive models based on rules and symbols typically require a high degree of handwiring. One way of avoiding the hand-wiring of rules is to rely on connectionist networks for modeling some of the core processes in language acquisition. However, connectionist models have problems with scalability and generativity. Ideally, we want a model that will keep the strengths of both symbolic and connectionist models, while overcoming their respective shortcomings. One model that may be able to do this is a connectionist extension of the Competition Model which relies on the lexical item and lexical categories as ways of coordinating processing and learning on the levels of syntax, audition, articulation, and semantics.

Nocturnality in dinosaurs inferred from scleral ring and orbit morphology.

Variation in daily activity patterns facilitates temporal partitioning of habitat and resources among species. Knowledge of temporal niche partitioning in paleobiological systems has been limited by the difficulty of obtaining reliable information about activity patterns from fossils. On the basis of an analysis of scleral ring and orbit morphology in 33 archosaurs, including dinosaurs and pter...

Comment on "Nocturnality in dinosaurs inferred from scleral ring and orbit morphology".

Schmitz and Motani (Reports, 6 May 2011, p. 705) claimed to definitively reconstruct activity patterns of Mesozoic archosaurs using the anatomy of the orbit and scleral ring. However, we find serious flaws in the data, methods, and interpretations of this study. Accordingly, it is not yet possible to reconstruct the activity patterns of most fossil archosaurs with a high degree of confidence.

Carnivorous fungi from Cretaceous amber.

Carnivorous fungi dating back to the age of the dinosaurs have been found fossilized in circa-100-million-year-old amber. The fossil fungi used hyphal rings as trapping devices and are preserved together with their prey, small nematodes. The excellent preservation in amber allowed comparison with extant groups: On the basis of the mode of ring formation and the dimorphic mode of life, the fossi...

Euoplocephalus tutus and the Diversity of Ankylosaurid Dinosaurs in the Late Cretaceous of Alberta, Canada, and Montana, USA

Few ankylosaurs are known from more than a single specimen, but the ankylosaurid Euoplocephalus tutus (from the Late Cretaceous of Alberta, Canada and Montana, USA) is represented by dozens of skulls and partial skeletons, and is therefore an important taxon for understanding intraspecific variation in ankylosaurs. Euoplocephalus is unusual compared to other dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous o...

Transmittance of MIM Waveguides Containing Semi-Circular Ring Shaped and Rectangular Ring Shaped Grooves

In this paper the transmittance of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides containing semi-circular ring shaped and rectangular ring shaped grooves are investigated. By varying groove parameters their effects on the transmittance of the MIM waveguides are investigated. The results show that the transmittance spectra of the waveguides have maximum and minimum points, and by using appropriate para...
