Auditory Afferent and Efferent Assessment Post Functional Hemispherectomy: A Case Study

چکیده
We had a unique opportunity to investigate the auditory processing abilities of a 10 year-old female after a left functional hemispherectomy. We administered a comprehensive battery of behavioral and electrophysiological tests, assessing both afferent and efferent auditory pathways. Normal peripheral hearing was established. A normal masking level difference threshold and gap detection threshold were obtained. Normal performance on the Frequency Pattern Test and Duration Pattern Test was also

fMRI and DTI assessment of patients undergoing radical epilepsy surgery.
Hemispherectomy is effective for young patients suffered from unilateral cortical disease and severe drug-resistant epilepsy, but a major concern for hemispherectomy is the remaining brain functions and function recovery in patients after such surgery. In this study, seven patients were evaluated with clinical and imaging assessment pre- and post-surgery. Among them, four underwent anatomic hem...
متن کاملVisual hallucinations: A novel complication after hemispherectomy
Two patients at our center experienced florid visual hallucinations following hemispherectomy. Case 1 had intractable left hemisphere focal seizures at 20 months of age from a previous stroke. Following functional hemispherectomy at age 3, he experienced frightening hallucinations 1 month post-operatively for 3.5 months. Case 2 underwent subtotal hemispherectomy at age 6 for intractable focal s...
متن کاملAfferent and efferent activity in single units of the cat's optic nerve.
Auditory and somatic stimuli have been shown in a previous study to ehcit efferent activity in the optic nerve of cats; this activity was recorded with gross electrodes. This study was undertaken with the purpose of identifying efferent activity at the single unit level. Afferent units and the changes induced in their activity by auditory and somatic stimulation were ako analyzed. Twenty health...
متن کاملRe-Emergent Inhibition of Cochlear Inner Hair Cells in a Mouse Model of Hearing Loss.
UNLABELLED Hearing loss among the elderly correlates with diminished social, mental, and physical health. Age-related cochlear cell death does occur, but growing anatomical evidence suggests that synaptic rearrangements on sensory hair cells also contribute to auditory functional decline. Here we present voltage-clamp recordings from inner hair cells of the C57BL/6J mouse model of age-related h...
متن کاملEfferent synapses return to inner hair cells in the aging cochlea.
Efferent innervation of the cochlea undergoes extensive modification early in development, but it is unclear if efferent synapses are modified by age, hearing loss, or both. Structural alterations in the cochlea affecting information transfer from the auditory periphery to the brain may contribute to age-related hearing deficits. We investigated changes to efferent innervation in the vicinity o...
