Navigating Clustered Graphs Using Force-Directed Methods
نویسندگان
چکیده
Graphs which arise in Information Visualization applications are typically very large: thousands, or perhaps millions of nodes. Current graph drawing methods successfully deal with (at best) a few hundred nodes. This paper describes a strategy for the visualization and navigation of graphs. The strategy has three elements: 1. A layered architecture, called CGA, for handling clustered graphs: these are graphs with a hierarchical node clustering superimposed. 2. An online force-directed graph drawing method. 3. Animation methods. Using this strategy, a user may view an abridgment of a graph, that is, a small part of the graph that is currently of interest. By changing the abridgment, the user may travel through the graph. The changes use animation to smoothly transform one view to the next. The strategy has been implemented in a prototype system called DA-TU. Communicated by G. Liotta and S. H. Whitesides: submitted September 1998; revised July 2000. Visualizing Large Hierarchically Clustered Graphs with a Landscape Metaphor
Large graphs appear in many application domains. Their analysis can be done automatically by machines, for which the graph size is less of a problem, or, especially for exploration tasks, visually by humans. The graph drawing literature contains many efficient methods for visualizing large graphs, see e.g. [4, Chapter 12], but for large graphs it is often useful to first compute a sequence of c...
متن کاملMethod for drawing intersecting clustered graphs and its application to web ontology language
We introduce a class of graphs called an intersecting clustered graph that is a clustered graph with intersections among clusters. We propose a novel method for nicely drawing the graph based on the electric spring model that is force-directed approach. We evaluate the performance of this method through experiments. Then we apply the proposed method to the area of Web Ontology Language.
متن کاملForce-directed Animations for a Class of Dynamic Bipartite and Clustered Graphs
This report presents several different force-directed approaches to animating the changing relationships between actors and movie production companies in the Internet Movie Database. This data is chosen as representative of commonly occurring dynamic social networks. The animations are built around two distinct abstract graph models: a bipartite graph model and a clustered graph model. The anim...
متن کاملInteractive 3D Force-Directed Edge Bundling on Clustered Edges
Graphs play an important role in data analysis. Especially, graphs with a natural spatial embedding can benefit from a 3D visualization. But even more then in 2D, graphs visualized as intuitively readable 3D node-link diagrams can become very cluttered. This makes graph exploration and data analysis difficult. For this reason, we focus on the challenge of reducing edge clutter by utilizing edge...
متن کاملInteractive Graph Layout of a Million Nodes
Sensemaking of large graphs, specifically those with millions of nodes, is a crucial task in many fields. Automatic graph layout algorithms, augmented with real-time human-in-the-loop interaction, can potentially support sensemaking of large graphs. However, designing interactive algorithms to achieve this is challenging. In this paper, we tackle the scalability problem of interactive layout of...
